Monday #ConservationOptimism🌎 Census finds Mexico's jaguar population is up by 20% to 4,800. The study was completed by 16 institutions and 25 academic groups who deployed 396 remotely activated cameras to gain knowledge on the population. | Photo by: Mexico News Daily | #Mexico #jaguar #endextinction #animals #fieldwork #conservation #wildlifephotography #wildlife #wildlifebiologist #wildlifeconservation #hope #KeyConservation
Updates from the field
Many of our students have spent the past two months working in the field - getting experience with the animals, science and management they’ve been studying.
Recent graduate Martin Etchemendy continues the work he during the summers while he was an an undergrad. He’s helping Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks study pallid sturgeon in Montana’s Missouri River.
This is an 11-year old pallid sturgeon, measuring at just under 400 mm. They caught it in a trammel net close to the Ft. Peck Dam where temperatures are cold, which might partly explain why it’s so small.
Sarah Winchell is working with the Sitka Ranger District for the U.S. Forest Service in Alaska. She says “It’s unbelievably amazing and I recommend it to anyone going into fisheries. it’s really cool to get firsthand info and be a part of a subsistence fishery - and the bears we deal with every day are a real close second with the fish!”
Sarah caught this sockeye while beach seining.
Dakota Vaccaro, a junior, has spent her summer doing an internship with the University of Montana Bird Ecology lab on their BEVEP banding project. The project team educates people on the importance of preserving riparian areas for wildlife by inviting them to participate in their bird banding research. Dakota spent much of her summer on the MPG Ranch near Florence, where these photos were taken.

A little mid-week #conservationoptimism |Repost @ilcp_photographers | The black-footed ferret was thought to be extinct twice in the 20th century due to human and natural threats. The last surviving population of black-footed ferrets was found in Meeteetse, Wyoming in 1981. Since then significant efforts have been made to recover the population and there are now over 300 animals living wild in North America. This is an example of the impact of the U.S. Endangered Species Act and those who helped create it like Nathaniel Reed. We love seeing posts about species returning back to habitats they haven’t been seen in a long time! | Repost @yosemitenps | Happy World Wildlife Day!! To celebrate, we have some wonderful news to share about a rare Yosemite wildlife sighting this past year! . Biologists were thrilled when, last fall, this wildlife camera footage revealed the first documented sighting of a Pacific fisher north of the Merced River in Yosemite in nearly 100 years. The fisher population in the southern Sierra Nevada is currently declining from cumulative threats including habitat loss, habitat fragmentation, rodenticide poisoning, and vehicle strikes. The home range of fishers in the Sierra has shrunk dramatically, highlighting the importance of this recent detection. Through tracking this fisher, biologists hope to discover how fishers might begin to naturally repopulate their previously occupied range north of the Merced River. The reappearance of wildlife into previously occupied areas is cause for celebration, and it speaks to how vital our public lands are today. #WorldWildlifeDay #fisher #Yosemite #NationalPark #YosemiteNationalPark #California #USA #Sierra #SierraNevada #forest #wildlifeconservation #wildlife #wildlifephotography #Merced #conservation #discover #discovery #nature #animals #cameratrap #fieldwork #hope #biologist #wildlifebiologist #hope #conservationoptimism #KeyConservation
Nature has the best pops of color, don’t you think? | Repost @natgeo | Photograph by @thomaspeschak #Galapagos #Marine #Iguanas live on the edge and the difference between life and death is a few degrees of temperature. The world's only #ocean going #lizards graze on cold #water #seaweeds. Increases in sea temperature due to climate change have detrimental effects on marine iguana populations. No seaweed=No iguanas. If temperatures continue to warm these Galapagos icons could become the first to disappear. The world's leading scientists have just met at @darwinfound in the Galapagos to discuss how to safeguard and protect the island's unique fauna and flora from climate change.
