The first reintroduction of African wild dogs to Mozambique has just been completed! The pack’s new home is in @gorongosapark where they are hoping to establish the Wild 🐶 population there. Follow their progress as they get adjusted to their new home. A new research method shows that photos taken by drones allow scientists to accurately measure marine mammals without having to catch them. Years of dedicated conservation efforts has brought the Amur leopard population from only 30 individuals to 103. This is the first time in decades that the population has been over 100 animals. When the population was at its lowest scientists were seriously considering bringing the entire population into captivity to protect them from poachers and boost the population. A little mid-week #conservationoptimism |Repost @ilcp_photographers | The black-footed ferret was thought to be extinct twice in the 20th century due to human and natural threats. The last surviving population of black-footed ferrets was found in Meeteetse, Wyoming in 1981. Since then significant efforts have been made to recover the population and there are now over 300 animals living wild in North America. This is an example of the impact of the U.S. Endangered Species Act and those who helped create it like Nathaniel Reed. After a 50 year absence due to poaching Black #rhinos have been reintroduced back into #Chad.🦏 Six rhinos were flown 3,000 miles from South Africa to be released in Zakouma National Park. We love starting our day with some #ConservationOptimism 🦓🦓🦓| Repost @lewa_wildlife | The results of the Great Grevy's Rally, 2018 are out! And they are incredibly encouraging - Kenya now holds 2,812 Grevy's zebra, an increase from the 2,350 count from 2016. The increase is partly as a result of enhanced survey effort in the northern counties- more teams drove their routes repeatedly and many Grevy's zebra missed in 2016 were 'found' in GGR 2018! But more so, the continued efforts by communities and conservation areas to conserve this rare zebra species. The results have only been made possible thanks to the citizen scientists that drove over 25, 000 km squared area in the Grevy's zebra's range, and the great collaboration by numerous conservation partners. The results were released this weekend during the Great Grevy's Ball to national and county governments, conservationists and citizen scientists who came together to celebrate this momentous effort. The future is bright for the endangered Grevy's zebra in Kenya, and our national target is to increase the population to 3,000 by 2020.
