Mexican legend Salvador Sanchez won the “Battle of the Little Giants” by hammering Wilfredo Gomez into defeat in eight rounds #OnThisDay at Caesars Palace, Las Vegas to make his sixth successful defence of the WBC featherweight title. A packed house saw WBC super-bantamweight king Gomez, the undefeated power punching “Bazooka” from Puerto Rico, clinically jabbed, countered and eventually pounded to defeat by an ice-cold fighting machine on a hot Nevada night. 24-year-old Gomez was floored and nearly stopped in a sensational first round. But in round eighth was nailed against the ropes and smashed to the floor by a battery of blows. Bruised and bleeding, he bravely made it to his feet but referee Carlos Padilla had seen enough. Throughout the fight there were fierce toe-to-toe exchanges as Sanchez, who earned a reputation for an iron chin, stood with Gomez, who had a streak of 32 straight knockout victories. Sanchez, 22, proved himself to be one of the outstanding champions of the modern era in a fight that is ranked with the all-time great dramatic battles. #boxing #BoxingNews #BoxingHistory #SalvadorSanchez #WilfredoGomez #SanchezGomez (at Caesars Palace) https://www.instagram.com/p/BmvXqgTBaBi/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=evgtuxa5lmwb
