Ah, Chapter 2.

It's funny how certain chapters come out exactly the way we plan them, the way some swerve when we least expect it and the way others grow into a place to fill gaps we didn’t know were there.

Growing to fill a gap was exactly how Big Gay Meteorite came into being.

We originally wrote the outline for these early chapters between October-November-December but as we developed the narrative drafts from a more complex RP-style outline, we realized we needed to sequel out the scenes from chapter one*. In other words, let these idiots process what they were doing and the consequences of being violent morons together.

A few things I adore about this chapter.

-All of Shane’s internal monologuing. Although he usually focuses on being an emotional potato soup of FEELINGS, this chapter has him in FINE form. I remember when Ging first drafted it out how emotionally hit I was with his suicidal ideation. ((Just a note, if you’re having thoughts of suicide, please look below where I have included some helpful links for you to reach for help. Do not follow the example of our sad chicken man okay. He is not a good example of how one handles mental health.)) Shane is so not in a good place here, and while we knew that in chapter one? We really see how he’s calcifying into this depression.

In Ginger’s original story, Stars, Shane meets Sophia a few months after he’s moved to Pelican Town. Here though? We can see what a difference its made for him to have two years of no one connecting with him. And while it breaks one’s heart as a reader, as a writer, we’re so intrigued by following that natural depression and how it manifests in his life.

On the other end, we were thrilled to establish William’s family. Angie and David are characters that are dear to both of us. William has ISSUES but they are all of his own making, choices, and outside circumstances. His family did their best by him. So often you read about a macho hero and all his poor decisions are a result of family. Yet, even though he’s had success, you know, endgame type success, he’s still not satisfied with life. He was like that at the beginning of Cloudburst- looking for meaning in his life. Looking for something to break up his depression and to give him purpose. He thought he’d found it through the farm. Yet, as we all know, loneliness man. It eats you. Without that connection he has driving him, he focuses on his tasks. Without that need to protect someone or provide? He’s just lost. *In writing narrative fiction, usually for tension building, you write a scene (two opposing characters have different goals) and then follow it with a sequel (the protagonists decide what their new goal is) and go from there. **https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/ 1-800-273-8255 – Manned 24/7, this is a suicide prevention hotline
