After Nikola Tesla gave a lecture before the Royal Institution in London, he became very good friends with British scientist Sir William Crookes who was in attendance at the lecture. The next day, Crookes invited Tesla to his laboratory where Tesla showed Crookes how to build Tesla Coils on his own. They would have dinner that night and converse over a wide range of topics such as their own research, the importance of electricity in the future, metaphysics, religion, and even some of Crookes experiments which involved mental telepathy, spiritualism and human levitation. Crookes would notice Tesla's poor health from overwork, and after Tesla's departure would write him this letter:

My dear Tesla,

You are a true prophet. I have finished my new coil, and it does not do so well as the little one you made for me. I fear it is too large. I have fitted it with two sets of Levden jars; six quart jars on each side, but the spark is not long or thick, and there is scarcely any brush to be seen. The phosphorescence through my body when I hold one terminal is decidedly inferior to that given with the little one. I am actuating it only with the ordinary make and break of the large coil, as the alternator is not yet here, I do not think I have made any mistake in the winding of the coil, as your coil does just the same as mine.

I hope you will get away to the mountains of your native land as soon as you can. You are suffering from over work, and if you do not take care of yourself you will break down. Don't answer this letter or see any one but take the first train. I am thinking of doing so myself, but I am only thinking of going as far as Hastings.

Memorabilia Monday: Autographs 3: British Scientists

Continuing our ongoing series on the unusual Gordon Russell West autograph collection, today we'll focus on scientists.

First, we can start with an unlikely inventor.

Caption: Baron Henry Peter Brougham. 1778-1868. Celebrated British statesman, orator, jurist, and scientist. One of the founder of the "Edinburgh Review" in 1802. Counsel of Queen Caroline 1820-1821, and Lord Chancellor of England 1830-1834.

Baron Brougham is also known for inventing the brougham style of carriage.

Caption: Sir William Crookes, FRS, etc: 1832 - [1919] noted English chemist and physicist, who discovered thallium ad invented the radiometer.

He was also a pioneer in vacuum tube technology.

Caption: John Tyndall: 1820-1893. British physicist and natural philosopher, who made notable contributions in electricity, magnetism, light, acoustics, and glaciation.

Caption: Sir Richard Owen: 1804-1892. Noted English biologist and paleontologist.

Based on that letter, which is a bit hard to read, Owen was a bit feisty.

Caption: Sir William Thomson, 1st Lord of Kelvin, FRS, LLD, etc. Celebrated British physicist and mathematician, who made important contributions in electricity, magnetism, and heat. He took a prominent part in laying the first submarine cables across the Atlantic. (1824-1907).

“One cannot help looking at that little bulb of Crookes with a feeling akin to awe, when he considers all that it has done for scientific progress—first, the magnificent wonderful achievements of Roentgen. Possibly it may still contain a grateful Asmodeus, who will be let out of his narrow prison cell by a lucky student. At times it has seemed to me as though I myself heard a whispering voice, and I have searched eagerly among my dusty bulbs and I fear my imagination has deceived me, but there they are still, my dusty bulbs, and I am still listening hopefully.”

Nikola Tesla poses with his “magnifying transmitter,” capable of producing millions of volts of electricity. The discharge here is 22 feet in length. Tesla had created discharges up to 100 feet in length in numerous experiments in Colorado Springs. This famous photo of the great inventor was a double exposure pic taken for publicity. The inscription on the photograph is addressed to Sir William Crookes and reads;

“To my illustrious friend Sir William Crookes of whom I always think and whose letters I never answer!“

The discharge here is twenty-two foot in length. The inscription on the photograph is addressed to Sir William Crookes and reads;
