February 19th, 1815: twenty-one-year-old Lucy Hall, her daughter Letty, and five others escaped their enslavement on George Loker's farm in St. Inigoes, Maryland, and boarded a British frigate.

Lucy's husband, Jacob, who had a different enslaver, had already escaped to the ship and was waiting for them.

The family was later transferred to HMS Orlando and then resettled in Halifax, Nova Scotia as part of the Black Refugee movement following the War of 1812. Jacob found work in shipyards and Lucy was employed as a cook for the shipping magnate Sir William Cunard. After moving to Horton, Nova Scotia the Halls had a son named William in 1827.

William Hall would go on to join the Royal Navy and become the first Black person, the first Nova Scotian, and the first Canadian sailor to earn the Victorian Cross for his service during the Indian Rebellion of 1857.

Hall is commemorated today by the Royal Canadian Navy ship HMCS William Hall. One of William Hall's descendants, Canadian Army Sgt. Phillip Safire, delivered a speech at Irving Shipyard in Halifax as the keel of the vessel was laid. The text of the speech isn't included in the linked article, but it's amazing that the legacy of this brave family remains connected to Halifax.
