The Death of William Rufus, 1100 by Harry Payne
I didn’t post it but found it on the subreddit for my fave podcast. This is one of the jokes that I so desperately wish everyone could get, because this is the funniest possible use of this meme.
I’m genuinely mad that I’m the only person I know IRL obsessed with the minutia of British history. Because everyone deserves to giggle at this.
@wyf-of-bathe it’s a little after the general time period of the Anglo Saxon era, but may still be in your wheelhouse enough to appreciate.
Time Travel Question : Murder and Disappearance Edition I
If you could travel through time, but only for Research, not to change anything, what would you pick?
Who was Jack the Ripper?
What Happened to the Sodder Children? (1969)
Was La Bete du Gevaudan (18th century Auvergne) a person or an animal?
Did the Gandillon Family (France, 1598) have rabies? If not what was their deal
Who specifically murdered King William (II) Rufus of England?
Who murdered Edward V and Richard of Shrewsbury and When?
Was Mary Queen of Scots complicit in the murder of Lord Darnley
Did Amy Robsart fall, jump, or was she pushed?
Who killed Elizabeth Short (the Black Dahlia)?
Who was the Somerton Man and who killed him?
What exactly happened to Australian Prime Minister Harold Holt
Another Murder or Disappearance in the notes
Given that Judge Crater, Roanoke, and the Dyatlov Pass Incident are credibly solved, though not 100% provable, I'm leaving them out in favor of things ,ore mysterious. I almost left out Amelia Earhart, but the evidence there is sketchier.
Some people were a little confused. Edward V and Richard of Shrewsbury are the Princes in the Tower.
William II (1056-1100) was categorically denounced in his time and after his death for presiding over what was considered a dissolute court, in terms that, in modern times, would have raised questions about his sexuality. In keeping with Norman tradition, William II held both the English and their culture in contempt.
He appears to have been an eccentric figure, and his reign was marked by his bellicose temperament. He neither married nor had any children, legitimate or illegitimate, which, along with contemporary accounts, has led some historians to speculate about his homosexuality or bisexuality.
You know, when you really think about it, Rufus is an asshole. He uses a traumatized child as his own "punishment". Tells said traumatized child that TOO THEIR FACE. Threatens to use the sand sorting as a punishment after iron year (TBK). Threatens to hang Call and Tamara over a bottomless pit. Assumes that Call and Tamara would use anti-scrying stones to sneak around and break rules despite them not doing anything that he knew about that could make him think that. Makes his students get lost in caves. Blames them when another guy from a different magisterium gets lost in the caves and breaks his leg which wasn't even their fault (and it's even stupider when you remember he literally sent them out on their own in iron year). Didn't bother checking in on Constantine's lessons with Jospeh or comforting Constantine after Jericho's death, causing Jospeh to be able to emotionally manipulate Constantine into turning evil. Gets mad at Alastair for being traumatized by the magic war that turned his best friend evil and killed his wife. Accuses Alastair of being a bad parent for not wanting to send Call into the care of the people that killed the entire rest of their family and caused Call's disability. Gave Call a zero on the fire test even though not only did the flame not go out (which as the whole damn test) but Call actually created MORE FIRE. Insulted Call's posture at the iron trial. Guilted Call for trying to fail the test by saying Sarah would be disappointed if she were alive to see it. Blamed Call for falling off a log the students were expected to fall off of and getting injured even thought the Masters were the ones who choice to hold it in a dangerous place. Almost never stood up for any of his students when the Assembly was doing/saying shit to them. And so much other bullshit that I'm probably not even remembering.
Fuck Rufus. His apprentices deserved so much better.

I feel like whoever made this painting of William Rufus getting accidentally shot with an arrow didn't see it first hand.
