June 8th 1702, court martial of English Pirate, explorer and naturalist William Dampier. The first person to circumnavigate the world three times, Dampier was also the first Englishman to explore Australia, and to write and collect botanical specimens, and describe the inhabitants. In 1697 he published his discoveries as ‘A New Voyage Round the World’, during a later circumnavigation he also rescued a Scottish privateer and Royal Navy officer named Alexander Selkirk; who had spent four years and four months as a castaway on an uninhabited island, in the South Pacific Ocean. Selkirk is a possible source for the story of Daniel Defoe's ‘Robinson Crusoe’. Serving as Captain on one of Dampier’s ships when Selkirk was rescued, was Woodes Rogers, who later as Governor of the Bahamas, would declare war on the pirates operating from there. On this day Dampier was court martialed for cruelty, after jailing his first lieutenant George Fisher in Brazil, and the death of boatswain John Norwood, for his treatment of the lieutenant he was found guilty and was dismissed from service in the Royal Navy.
