They'd been on the road for a few days, and frankly Ted was growing tired of driving so much. Even when Harper was behind the wheel, the monotony of seeing the same greenery over and over and over blurring in the car's windows was beginning to make him sick. And anxious. The windows were down, so they're both breathing fresh air as they drive into another big city. Ted likes big cities. How easy it is to be anonymous in them. She's sleeping as they arrive, so Ted makes the next few steps on his own. He can afford to, as well.
It's summertime. Time for vacations. Which is exactly what they're doing, thinks Ted to himself. Once Harper fell asleep in the passenger seat, he'd turned on the radio to a news station, but he flicks it off now as he parks the car in a driveway that looked vacant. He leaned over to press a kiss to Harper's full cheek. "Home, sweet home," he says with a smile.

There's a very distinct difference between dreams and reality. Namely that one is fake and the other is not. Also that in dreams a hell of a lot of weird shit can happen.
