The Contemporary Jewish Museum’s main building is the former Pacific Gas & Electric Jessie Street Substation, which was originally built in 1881 and was rebuilt in 1907 by Willis Polk after the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on September 6, 1974.

Remembering Mrs. Ann Getty

(December 20, 1933 - September 14, 2020)

San Francisco has lost its grand patron of the arts and culture, on September 14th, Mrs. Ann Getty passed away at 79 from a heart attack. 

Besides running a design business, In 1995 she founded her design firm, Ann Getty & Associates, Mrs. Ann Getty founded a San Francisco preschool and helped raise funds for numerous nonprofits, including the University of California, San Francisco, the San Francisco Symphony, Benioff Children’s Hospitals, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, the San Francisco Opera, the Leakey Foundation and the Napa Valley Festival. 

The classic 1906 Willis Polk designed estate in Pacific Heights showcases a world-class collection of antiques, art, and objets d'art. After moving into the house in 1973, Mrs. Getty collaborated with many designers, including Albert Hadley, Sister Parish, John Stefanidis, Eleanor Ford and Leawitt Weaver to create the magnificent interiors. 

The designer and philanthropist dedicated her life to the fields of anthropology, publishing, interior design, and early childhood development.

⚜ Circa 1922 photos of the 98-room Beaux-Arts French Château built in 1916 by Pullman Luxury Railway Car heiress, Harriett Pullman Carolan just south of San Francisco, California.

🇨🇵 Harriett Pullman Carolan was a lifelong Francophile who wanted to build Carolands as her own authentically French Château in the San Francisco Bay Area. She chose the most important French architect, Ernest Sanson and Landscape-architect, Achillès Duchêne, to execute her dream house on 554 acres of pristine suburban woodlands.

The most high-profile recent case of demolition of a historic building was at 841 Chestnut St., a 1908 brown-shingle home in a lush garden setting on Russian Hill. It was one of two rustic urban homes designed by master architect Willis Polk, who designed San Francisco landmarks such as the Flood Mansion, the Merchants Exchange Building and the Hallidie Building.

Today April 18th marked the 111th year anniversary of the Great Earthquake and Fire of San Francisco, California. Experts believe that it was approximately 7.7 - 7.9 magnitude quake that lasted for one minute as a result of the rupturing of the northernmost stretch of the San Andreas Fault which alongside the city of San Francisco and below it through its peninsula 800 miles to the middle of the state. What followed the massive quake was a devastating fire that actually did more damage and killed more people than the quake. Thousands lost their lives and hundreds of thousands lost their homes. It is a testament to the fighting spirit and strength of character that the city quickly rebuilt itself into an even more culturally affluent and significant city that to this day represents a progressive, modern and educated community of diversity and ingenuity. No wonder its Silicon Valley and environs are home to Google, Apple, Facebook, Intel, Yahoo and Twitter to name but a few. We mourn the loss of so many while we celebrate the accomplishments of their descendants and survivors. ~ A proud San Franciscan.
