Hey there! I'm pretty new to comics and having a hard time with the crossovers in the new comics series. Could you explain the read-order of the BTVS (2019), Angel + Spike, and Hellmouth comics? I'm a bit confused on how they should be read. Thanks so much!
Hi again! I'm the anon that asked about the read-order of the new comics. I'm also unsure about the shorter arcs like Every Generation, so if you could incorporate these other storylines into the previous ask I'd be very grateful! Thank you!
Hello!
The first tip I have is look into publication dates, since they are the suggested reading order by the publisher itself, and following it can reproduce the “official” experience. I imagine that having these dates on hand isn’t simple, but, if you’re interested in at least knowing, I recommend the page for the publication order of comics on the Buffyverse Wiki, which I personally keep up to date.
Now, I'll list bellow a simple reading order based on what stories depend on another, but I’ll also include some relevant chronological details. I've posted here a reading order considering trade paperbacks, but this one will be about single issues.
Buffy #1
Buffy #2
Buffy #3
Buffy #4 (ends with the same scene as Angel #0)
Angel #0 (begins with the same scene a Buffy #4, the rest is flashbacks)
Frenemies (takes place in the middle of Buffy #5)
Buffy #5
Buffy #6
Angel #1
Angel #2
Angel #3
Angel #4
Buffy #7
Chosen Ones (flashbacks, but has the origin of Sunnydale’s hellmouth)
Now the crossover begins. All three series are parallel to each other, like the TV shows were. Keep in mind that, while days pass in Sunnydale and Los Angeles, it’s mere hours inside the hellmouth. It looks messy, but the series aren’t as dependent on each other as they might appear.
Buffy #8
Angel #5 (ends with the same scene as Buffy #8)
Hellmouth #1 (Spike leaves Sunnydale)
Angel #6 (Spike arrives in Los Angeles)
Angel #7
Angel #8
Hellmouth #2
Hellmouth #3
Hellmouth #4
Buffy #9
Buffy #10
Buffy #11
Buffy #12 (Scoobies go after Buffy)
Hellmouth #5 (Scoobies arrive to help Buffy)
Every Generation (flashbacks for a character from Hellmouth)
End of the crossover, Buffy and Angel returns to their respective titles. The Willow miniseries begins. The Angel series is renamed Angel + Spike and ends in issue #16.
Buffy #13 (flashbacks)
Angel + Spike #9 (Angel is back in Los Angeles)
Angel + Spike #10
Angel + Spike #11
Angel + Spike #12
Willow #1
Willow #2
Willow #3
Willow #4
Willow #5 (Willow leaves to Sunnydale)
