After skipping day 2 of the fest, there were 2 shows that I had the chance to see on day 3. One surprised me with the quality because it was an artist I've seen a few times, and the other one was impressive with an artist that I like, but was getting a chance to see live for the first time.
Getting to the grounds about 6:30 pm, I made my way over to the US Cellular Connection Stage, with some friends & family, for local/regional performer Willy Porter. I have seen Willy Porter live 4 previous times (probably covering the last 8 or 9 years), twice in MN where I was there representing KFAI radio at his concerts, and twice here where he was on free stages and not playing against others that I would want to see at the time. He was always a solid performer, and although, I haven't been overly impressed by him, I always found him to be a solid singer/songwriter and performer with a good band. On this night, however, I found him to be a step up from what I had remembered from before. The interaction between him and his band was crisp and engaging, and the songs were quite catchy. I don't know if this was a particularly good set for him, if he has just progressed that much since I last saw him, or if he just hit a sweet spot with me this time around. Either way, it's nice to see someone who has been performing for a long time continuing to improve on his craft, while continuing to keep and grow his audience (he had a very nice turnout for the show, in which he was the show before headliner KT Tunstall).
Following Willy Porter we made our way over to the Harley-Davidson for the 10 pm show there, Ray Lamontagne. He went on to a pretty packed stage at the Harley and immediately dropped into songs off his new record Ouroboros. It is a very good record (I've only had the chance to spin it a couple of times, so I'm still absorbing it) that was produced by Jim James of My Morning Jacket and had the MMJ members backing him on the album. The MMJ members (minus Jim James) are touring with him on this tour as well, which gives Ray some musical dimensions not necessrily always apparent in his music. One of those dimensions in the new songs is definitely a strong Pink Floyd vibe, that as the band tore into the songs and stretched them out in different ways the music could float right across you, and them come inward as the lyrics come back into the fold. For fans of Ray's that have been with him for up to the past 10 or so years that he's been recording, 13 of the 14 songs came from his last 2 albums, with onee song off of his first album and the 2nd and 3rd albums not being represented. The last 2 albums being his most experimental musically taking his singer/songwriter music deeper into psychedelic territory. It was a wonderful show that leaves me not only hoping that I get to see Ray play again soon, but also continues to raise my hopes to see My Morning Jacket live as well (a band that I have heard nothing except exceptional things about their live shows over the past 10 years). A great night at the Big Gig!
