obviously this is an extremely bizarre tweet that got ratioed to hell and back, but it’s also hilarious that of all the authors in the entire English literary canon, she somehow landed on Shakespeare as the epitome of cisnormative writing.

like ma’am shakespeare’s characters go on stage and announce their gender to the audience within the first few lines in nearly every play. Including…you know….the very play you reference???

romeo and juliet was about how children repeat, replicate, and copy what they observe adults doing and about how the cycle of violence is endlessly perpetuated. juliet was 13. romeo was probably around 17. romeos friends - benvolio, mercutio, and the like - were also probably around 17-19. we accept that they're the same age as tybalt, which places him from 17-19 too. paris, despite being weirdly older than juliet, is probably still just their age because the r+j age gap is still weird.

idk what your vision on the siblings laertes and ophelia is but I personally imagined them as twins and it was so heartbreaking. I mean imagine you're a young woman and your brother who is your age can go out and about and build a career for himself and travel and you can't, you're bound to your dad's care forever unless you get married. Then you'll be bound to your husband and his family which isn't good either.

And you know it's not your brother's fault, you want to be happy for him and support his personal development but doesn't it make you so goddamn jealous that he's got a big wide world to go explore and you're confined to your minuscule one

Then on top of it all they KILL YOUR DAD that's an even worse situation, she would become fully financially dependant on her brother who is HER OWN AGE, talk about humiliation. The blues must go on
