There’s a quality that certain books/movies/TV shows have that leads me to say, “Yeah, I can see people making fanfiction of that.” It’s something to do, I think, with how tight the story is, how much feels open-ended or like it could be elaborated on.

Something like Breaking Bad, for example, has low squiggability (that’s what I’m calling this quality). It’s tightly written, the characters are consistent, there’s little left to interpolate or extrapolate. Obviously, people DO write fanfic of Breaking Bad, but it still has a low squiggability score. Whereas something like Supernatural has a high squiggability score. Fantasy and science fiction often have high squiggability scores. This suggests squiggability could also be related to worldbuilding and potential for people to borrow a premise or setting.

And sometimes you’ll read or watch something and you’ll say, “Ah, low squiggability,” and then you’ll open tumblr and find out that everyone else seem to think its squiggability was very high indeed.

A "Little Women" remark: Marmee and Beth are fat

Well, not fat, per se, but definitely less slim than the actresses who usually play them in the adaptations.

In the first edition of Little Women, Marmee is described as "a stout, motherly woman." Unfortunately, this is erased from other editions of the book. The revised text of 1880 replaces the word "stout" with "tall" – apparently, the editor (who allegedly did more of the revising than Alcott herself did) thought it was unseemly for a wise and dignified mother to be fat.

But even in the revised text, some hints remain in place that Beth is chubby before her illness. When the girls perform their Christmas play, the role of the servant is presumably played by Beth, based on the description of "his" timidness and how "he" forgets "his" lines due to stage fright. That "servant" is also described as stout. Later, when the girls' Pickwick Club is introduced, we're told that Beth plays the role of Tracy Tupman, a fat gentleman character from Dickens' Pickwick Papers, precisely because of her "round" figure. At the start of Part II, the narrator tells us that Beth has become slender, but this is because she's sick. When she was healthy, she was heavier.

Actually, the only female in the March family who seems to be naturally thin is Jo. Meg is described as "plump" (in a complimentary way, meaning pleasantly curvaceous) in the first chapter, while the adult Amy's figure is described as "Junoesque," meaning that she's sturdily built like an ancient Greco-Roman statue, not a lithe and delicate type of beauty.

Just because illustrations and screen adaptations follow conventions of beauty and make them all slender and delicate doesn't mean we need to imagine them that way.

Finally a hand sewing tutorial on a hemline that isn't just the ladder stitch! the ladder stitch disappears when you tighten it, but it's not meant for hemlines because it breaks really easily! The overlock stitch is more stable, so it holds much longer, and it won't pucker or warp the fabric!

Some drawing of my favorite parings from SFTH since today I did my first ever improv play for my city's kids fest!!! If I had never discovered Shoot From The Hip I know I would have never done the play, I have bad social anxiety so preforming on a stage was something I thought I would never do, but I did it!! and I am really happy for doing it and hope to do more plays in the future.
