They can be racing through the house at full speed, chasing invisible enemies and clearly having the time of their lives. The moment I pick up the camera, however, they transform. Suddenly I appear to be living with two profoundly unimpressed, slightly offended loaves of bread. Kornelia and Wilma (February, 2026).
Wilma Rudolph had polio as a child, and doctors said she might never walk again. She wore a metal leg brace for years, but her family helped her keep moving. By age 11, she could run. In 1960, she became the first American woman to win three track and field gold medals at one Olympic Games.
The old wandering traders last ever journey was to a desert village, one of her usual destinations. The people were kind, the food was good, and there were plenty of children who wanted to hear her stories. Just recently the little village had been able to trade more with other villages, and the local economy had steadily been going up.
And now, it was all in flames.
Just recently in the day, the village had been subjected to a raiding. Something that was all too familiar with the trader.
The trader with her llamas and little copper golem hurried, despite the flames and crumbling buildings and the bloodied streets, straight to the center of the village. She was hopeful to find anyone alive, that not everyone had been slaughtered and this village was not to become yet another ruin.
In the very center, surrounded by flames, laid the only body who had yet to disintegrate into smoke and dust. Her clothes were stained in her own blood, and across her body was a corpse disintegrating into smoke.
She was still alive, but just barely. She has passed out from the pain and blood loss, and her life was still on the line. The trader cut a piece of rope she'd used to guide her llamas, and tied a tourniquet around the gaping wound where the young womans arm had once been. It was not the best, but it would have to do until they could find a doctor.
The trader knew at this point, she couldn't stand to see another massacre. After reaching the doctor and handing over the young woman, she found an empty house to call her own.
In every step of the desert womans recovery, the trader was by her side.
