Thor watches Steven Universe
-----
Darcy's boss was dating a real life Alien Warrior Prince. Steven had been thrilled since she'd mentioned it a few months ago, just off-handedly, as part of the story of how she'd saved the Earth from an extra-dimensional convergence.
And now Steven got to finally meet him.
"Wow," Steven whispered, looking up, and uuuup.... Darcy told Steven about the huge muscles, but she hadn't mentioned that he was so tall, maybe almost as tall as Garnet.
He smiled down at Steven with an earnest, friendly expression. The light in Dr. Foster's kitchen outlined the fringes of his hair in gold, like the summer sun dancing along the edges of a cloud.
"Hello," he said, in a deep, calm voice. "I am Thor, of Asgard."
"I'm Steven," said Steven, so transfixed that it took him a second to remember the rest of his name. "...Of Universe." Um. Wait.
Thor laughed: a jolly, thunderous rumble that rattled one of the windowpanes. But Steven felt it was an approving laughter, not mockery. He reached out with one huge hand and grasped Steven's shoulder. "We are well met, Steven of Universe. I cannot fault your allegiance."
Thor’s skin looked human -- lined and folded along his joints, not smooth and elastic -- but something about the way it reflected energy reminded him of a Gem's physical projection. Like he existed slightly *beyond* the apparent solidness of his body.
Real. Life. Alien. Warrior. Prince.
Soooo awesome.
Thor turned to Darcy. "And how fares the Lady Amethyst?"
"She's great," Darcy said, grinning. "She took me surfing last weekend. And when I say that I mean, like, she was the surfboard."
Dr. Foster glanced nervously between Darcy and Thor. Getting Darcy started on an Amethyst story if you had any plans in the next hour was not exactly a good idea.
"Thank you for doing this, Thor," she broke in quickly. "I know it's short notice."
"Yeah!" Darcy added. "I promised I'd watch this guy for tonight, but now Jane needs me for urgent science reasons and you know how annoying it would be if I brought him along, ‘cause then we’d have someone wandering aimlessly around her lab while she's trying to science, breaking her equipment and messing with--"
Dr. Foster coughed noisily into her fist. "Yes," she said firmly. "Which is why I'm so grateful that you're willing to stay behind tonight and babysit."
"Of course," Thor said. Steven thought he sounded a little sad, but he rallied, grinning winsomely at Steven. "This will be fun!"
"Yeah!" Steven agreed.
"Careful," Darcy said. "Don't agree before Jane makes an offer on how she's going to make it up to you." Dr. Foster spluttered, and Darcy nudged Steven and nodded towards the door. "Meanwhile, I'll just say goodbye to my little man here."
------
Outside on the stoop, Darcy passed Steven three 20 dollar bills.
"I'll give you another twenty if Jane's house is in one piece when we come back," she said. "Fifty for the rest of the neighbourhood."
Steven accepted the money with the solemnity of a contract sworn.
"He seems like a great guy," Steven said. “And like he can take care of himself. Are you expecting something to go wrong?"
Darcy simultaneously shrugged, nodded, and shook her head to the sky. Steven was impressed. "He's a fantastic guy," she said. "But sometimes things. Just. Seem. To. Happen! You, out of anyone, should know how *that* is."
"I do," Steven said. He added, wondrously, "And he's a real life alien warrior prince and everything. It must be like living inside a story."
Darcy stared at him. For once, she couldn't find anything to say.
"Listen," she eventually told him. "It’s not like Thor’s dumb or anything. He's just kind of sad right now. His mom and brother died pretty recently."
"Oh no!"
"Yeah. So he's kinda clingy, which is *fine*. It's fine! But he's the god of lightning, and whenever he's in the same *building* as Jane's equipment it messes up her data. She hasn't gotten any good science for months." Darcy scrubbed her hand through her hair. "Man, and I thought it was bad when she was just thirsty for--"
Steven's wide, attentive eyes blinked up her. Darcy changed the subject. "So thanks for agreeing to run distraction."
"Well," Steven said thoughtfully. "Cheering up sad aliens is kind of my specialty."
Darcy snorted. She reached down to ruffle his hair, which Steven magnanimously allowed.
"Anyway. If he gets hungry, there's a wild boar and five gallons of ice cream in the freezer."
