What To Expect From The Windows 8 Launch
With the Windows 8 release coming up (just 3 weeks from this writing), I have been looking out for hardware release news to see what would be available after the release date. If you haven’t already heard, Microsoft will itself be releasing their own tablets called Surface. Microsoft has had good hardware experience with their Xbox and even had used the Surface name before on a touch tabletop (now known as PixelSense) and will have the Surface RT ready for the October 26 release and available at Microsoft Stores and the Microsoft Store Online. The RT will be the consumer model and we don’t expect to see the Surface Pro until after January 1. The RT model will be a great value with Word, Excel and OneNote included, but users will be limited to APPS created for the Modern UI and will not be able to join a Windows Domain. Other manufacturers, like Acer, Lenovo and Fujitsu, have been showing their own tablets running RT and presumably Windows 8 Professional, but it remains unclear whether they will be available on October 26 or not.
While Windows 8 sales will be driven by the tablets, you can certainly expect to be using Windows 8 Pro on a desktop, notebook and all in one touchscreen PC’s. While Ultrabook PC sales were disappointing so far, expect a resurgence of these ultra light, high performance, (in some cases)touchscreen portables. Bob Burns, Chief Innovation Officer of Osmosis Development Corp. a Floral Park NY based OEM of Windows based computers and servers, says “The Ultrabook is really a wonderful system. Weight is less than 2 lbs. and battery life is about 10 hours. And because the battery lasts so long I don’t need to have the power brick with me so that is another lb. that I’m not carrying around. Performance is also terrific. They use 3rd generation Intel Core processors and Solid State drives. It has all the power of a desktop PC with the ease of use of a tablet.” Some Ultrabooks include a feature called WiDi for connecting wirelessly to a TV to use as a display. An adapter may be required for the TV, but some newer TV’s have it built in.
The good news for users of XP, Vista and Windows 7 is the upgrade offer which will be available from the release date until January 31st, 2013. During this period you can download Windows 8 Pro for $39.99 or buy a DVD upgrade for $69.99. This is a really attractive offer for XP and Vista users, given the enhanced security, IE 10 and terrific performance. My test computer for all BETA versions of Windows 8 (as well as Windows 8 Pro) is an old Vista Tablet and it runs better than Vista ever ran on it. And I just installed it on an old Pentium D Dual Core PC and it is running well too. I would recommend better specs and a clean install as your results may vary.
So when the release date comes and the confetti flies, you will hopefully have the knowledge you need to buy, upgrade or just get in on the conversation!
