THE PLAN

Now armed with my Windows 7 emachine (with no connection to the internet), Kiwix, Microsoft Office from the 2000s, an aesthetic wallpaper, a CD cover maker, and a dream, I shall embark once again on my writing journey, just as I had as a child—internetless and without AI lurking in the corners. All I have is the ZIM files of a dictionary, Wikipedia, CSS, and hope.

Last week I took my laptop to the repair shop because the charging port was broken. Guy fixed it up great, holds a charge no problem.

Except once it was charged and turned on the screen stayed black. So I took it back this morning. Guy just called and said,

“Okay I found a solution but I couldn’t find the problem.”

Me: “lol what?”

Guy: “so I’ve only encountered this once before like 15 years ago. Your computer screen turned on just fine when I had the backing off, but when I screwed the backing on again the screen didn’t work. I probably took the backing off and on four times trying to figure this out. But I THINK there’s a tiny hairline fracture cutting power somewhere and when I screwed the screws in too tight it put stress on the fracture, so I left the screws a little loose and the screen works just fine.”

Me: “so you’re saying I just need a few loose screws to enjoy watching my shows?”

We both laugh about it, empathizing with an old laptop. He said if I wanted to come pick it up right away he’d wait but otherwise he was gonna go home early, so I’ll pick it up after work tomorrow morning.
