Wind Phone in the United States: Phone Booth to Talk to the Dead
There is a Wind Phone, located in Marshall NC that was inspired to be built based on a Japanese Philosophy of designating a disconnected phone booth, so mourners or people with grief can go and speak to their loved ones who passed away, and their words can “travel to them in the wind”
The builders of the only Wind Phone in the United States were inspired from hearing about the Japanese Wind Phone from This American Life podcast.
I visited the Wind Phone in December 2020 and I believe it is the only one in the United States. It was in a residential neighborhood, off the main street from Mars Hills, NC to Marshall. It is a beautiful location:
