Orange’s newest Cellar Door opens for Wine Week

Following the recent announcement of the purchase of the Union Bank Wine Bar, Swinging Bridge Wines have expanded further with the opening of a new cellar door.  

The new cellar door will open for the upcoming 2013 Orange Wine Week on the 17th of October, in the Union Bank building on the corner of Sale and Byng Streets.

“We opened our first cellar door in the main street of Canowindra in my Great Grandfather’s store a few years ago and have been busy ever since.  With most of our wines coming from the Orange region, it is a logical progression for us to emulate our cellar door in Orange,” said Swinging Bridge winemaker and owner, Tom Ward.

The Swinging Bridge brand has undergone a change in livery over the past few months, with the Swinging Bridge Estate range depicting a local artist’s watercolour expression of the bridge. 

A new range of wines, the Swinging Bridge Single Vineyard Range has also been introduced, with a Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, both made from single sites within the Orange wine region.

The full range of Swinging Bridge wines are available for tasting and sales at the new cellar door. The cellar door will offer tastings and sales seven days a week from 11am to 4pm Monday to Fridays and 11am to 5pm Saturday and Sunday.

Swinging Bridge’s Canowindra cellar door, located in historic Finn’s Stores, will continue to operate (Thursday to Mondays).

Swinging Bridge is a family owned wine grower located in the heart of the NSW Central Highlands at Canowindra.  Tom and Georgie Ward and their family established Swinging Bridge in 1995 with an initial planting of Shiraz and Chardonnay.  The vineyard was named after the historical wooden pedestrian bridge located at the bottom of the vineyard that traverses the Belubula River, linking the main township to South Canowindra. In 2011, the first Swinging Bridge cellar door opened in the old Finn’s Store building in the main street of Canowindra.

Wine Pairings that will surprise you from Jill Silverman Hough

Jill Silverman Hough is a Napa-based culinary instructor, food and wine writer, and cookbook author who wrote the series “100 Perfect Pairings,” two books filled with great recipes to pair with your favorite wines. While food and wine pairing is her passion, Jill knows that the thought of wine pairing can be a little daunting for most diners. 

“There are usually two occasions when you’re going to think about wine pairing: either when you’re having a dinner party, or you’ve been invited to a dinner party and have been asked to bring wine,” she said. But rather than avoiding it at all other times, she suggests thinking about food and wine pairing as she does— as an arena to ongoingly explore and enjoy the world of wine. As a place to start, Jill suggests some unusual, yet intriguing, pairings.

1.     Sparkling Wine + Potato Chips

You might not expect to talk about potato chips when you’re talking wine, but Jill raves about the nice contrast between the crispy, salty chips and the sweet bubbly wine. Anything fried and fatty like fried chicken or fried chickpeas will do too.

2.     Syrah + Anything With Bacon

She’s not talking about eating a strip of bacon with your Syrah—although that wouldn’t be a bad thing. Rather, Jill suggests pairing Syrah with any food with bacon in it. Instead of just chili, for example, put a little bacon on top of your chili for an extra pop.  “I made a lamb stew with bacon that pairs perfectly!” Jill said.

3.     Cabernet + Blue Cheese

Pairing a big wine (like Cabernet, Syrah, or Merlot) with blue cheese is polarizing—Jill said that some people love it and some people hate it, but she’s a fan. “Say you just pan-seared a steak in a skillet and have set the steak aside to rest-- pour some red wine into the skillet and scrape up the browned bits into the wine as the wine reduces, then take the pan off the heat and stir in some blue cheese (not pre-crumbled cheese--it won't melt as well), to make Steak with Red Wine and Blue Cheese Sauce!” Jill said.

Jill notes that no matter what you choose to pair, remember, it’s all subject to opinion. Eat and drink what you enjoy most.
