Hummingbird Hiro flies differently to Pigeon Fred, as in, his wings have a different range of motion and everything, but Fred's still able to teach him a lot. Even if Hiro has been known to zone out sometimes mid-lesson. (He's exhausted and doesn't quite realise. He gets a LOT better at focusing after the Bay Incident because he actually got an hour's torpor. )

True,  but I don’t think ANY kind of bird flies like a hummingbird, but hey, close enough right? Besides, beggars can’t be choosers.

Maybe Tadashi ends up watching the sessions (and trying not to be super jealous because FLYING) and making sure he force-feeds Hiro gummy bears at regular intervals

Hummingbird Hiro: FRED NO sums it up, haha. And then he just leaves these magazines just lying around his room. And then Hiro finds them. Hiro's like 'EW NO FRED WHY DO YOU HAVE THIS THERE'S A SLUR' and Fred's just like 'it's really old Hiro it wasn't considered a slur back then' and Hiro's like 'this one pigeon-person looks like you' and Fred just stands there and then quietly says that that's because they're related. (Officially, they're not. )

Awww, but I can see Hiro and Fred bonding a lot in this AU because they both have wings and most other people don’t (and he’s a bit too afraid of Falcon!GoGo to hang around with her too often, she really likes swooping down on him and just carrying him off because she thinks it’s funny. Hiro is less amused)

Maybe that’s how Fred and Tadashi met, because they wouldn’t have met through school. Tadashi was looking for someone with wings, maybe to help Hiro learn how to fly because he couldn’t, and he found Fred. Or maybe Aunt Cass found Fred, and asked him to help because otherwise Tadashi was going to build himself robotic wings of his own so he could show Hiro how to fly, and would probably break his neck jumping off the roof in the process. She offers him all the baked goods he could want, and Fred naturally agrees.

But while he and Hiro bond over learning to fly, Fred and Tadashi end up becoming really good friends too. And then eventually Tadashi introduces Fred to the Nerd Lab crew and they all become a happy group of friends and EVERYTHING IS HAPPY

Hummingbird Hiro: Yeah, Hiro ends up half-asleep a lot. He goes a bit cold, he barely breathes, his eyelids droop, he stiffens...but he remains conscious. Barely. And yeah, he gets picked up and carried around a lot. (Baymax is designed to care for all, but hummingbirds need a bit more care than everyone else-in between general anti-winged prejudice, the fact that they are mistaken for dead so easily, and everything else, they have a pretty high death rate. )

Fred is NOT a swan. Swans are terrifying. If you so much as LOOK at a baby swan the wrong way the parent swans will try to eat your eyeballs and break your bones with their wings. (They can ACTUALLY break bones with their wings. ) Fred would be a fancy breed of pigeon.

I’m just picturing Hummingbird!Hiro snuggling up in Baymax’s arms and just being carried around for a day while Baymax is following after Tadashi and aaaaah, so cute! I imagine Tadashi and Aunt Cass worry about Hiro pretty much all the time though. He’s so delicate and wee, he’s probably breaking bones all the time.

Oh I know, I’ve lived near enough rivers and lakes to have tangled with swans in the past. They’re almost as bad as the GEESE. But I was thinking more along the lines of birds that are associated with high status, and even if Swans are evil, they tend to be highly thought of.

Besides, are you trying to say Fred WOULDN’T bite people? (I can totally see him rocking peacock wings though. For the record yes peacocks can fly and yes it is awesome)

Hummingbird Hiro AU: Fred is also winged. There's a lot of anti-winged discrimination. Also, Hiro usually carries sweets around so he doesn't unexpectedly pass out or end up with cravings for sweets. Baymax carries both sugar-free and extra-sugar lollipops, Hiro has never, ever gotten a sugar-free one. (And yes, falcon Gogo. Falcon Gogo is cool. She still uses a bike a lot, because she is hopeless in high winds. )

(2/3): Baymax has wings so he can find stuck flyers-getting stuck is common in youngsters and hummingbirds. Hummingbirds because they can easily run out of energy, youngsters because they can often barely get into the air and have no clue how to fly at all. (Hiro got stuck so. many. times. The very DAY his wings were developed enough for him to fly, he got stuck in a tree flying away from bullies. He went torpid in that tree. When he was freed from the tree, someone started CPR. )(3/3): After the Tree Incident, Hiro started carrying around several bags of sweets at all times, and didn’t go into torpor for years. (He was hospitalised for broken ribs and a punctured airsac. The CPR person didn’t know how to do CPR on hummingbirds or how to tell if a hummingbird is torpid or not. ) In fact, when Wasabi’s van went into the bay, Hiro went torpid to avoid drowning (one breath every five minutes, nuff said) and that was the first time since the Tree Incident.

Ooh, what’s if Fred is winged but his family isn’t and in upper class society it’s very frowned upon. Fred’s parents love him anyways, that’s not a problem, but it’s another reason why no one in the Nerd Lab caught on right away that he was rich, because generally winged folk are considered less cultured. Maybe Fred’s got swan wings though, because there’s still some link between his ‘breeding’ so to speak and his wings.

Oh gosh, yes, giving Baymax wings would be super practical. As would having him carry around sweets. He’s basically designed to take care of hummingbirds, which makes sense because that’s probably what Tadashi had in mind.

THE TREE INCIDENT OH GOD. It started out being something funny and then it became not funny very fast. Maybe Hiro doesn’t go full torpid all that often, but he does often get sleepy or close to it, so he’ll just kind of curl up in a ball somewhere and rest for a moment. Minutes later he’ll be bouncing around like a kid on crack, but when he gets all sleepy you can just pick him up and move him around and he doesn’t say anything or move at all, he’s just like a ragdoll or something. Tadashi has had to pick him up and move him more than once when he sleepy-mode-d on one of Tadashi’s projects.

Wings/Hybrid AU where about 25% of the population is winged. Hiro is a hummingbird hybrid. Hummingbirds do not need to sleep, require large amounts of sugar, are constantly hyper and aggressive, and if it's cold they go into torpor (which is basically hibernation). Tadashi isn't winged, neither is Cass. Cue shenanigans.

Oh my god, cue shenanigans is right. Imagine Hiro getting mad at Tadashi so he flies away and lands on the roof where Tadashi can’t get to because he can’t fly, but then he forgets his gummy bears in his room, and so he doesn’t have the energy to get himself back down and he ends up stuck. Either Tadashi and Aunt Cass have to break out the ladder and nearly break their own necks getting him down, or Tadashi has to call in one of the Nerd Lab crew who have wings to help out (I’m picturing GoGo as having wings for sure. Some kind of falcon. Hiro gets very nervous when she comes swooping in because she always just kinda scoops him up and carries him off like he’s prey because GoGo gives no fricks)
