I haven't read Wingfeather Saga in a while, but I still remember the part that made me cry the hardest. And strangely, it's not Kal's transformation (although it was heartbreaking), or the reveal of who the "monster" (because he really wasn't) in the Hollows was, or any of the deaths that were suffered, or even Janner's sacrifice. All of those were very emotional to be sure, and I think I cried a little bit for each of them, but don't sue me, I'm weird when it comes to feeling and showing emotion.
The part that made me cry the hardest was the scene in The Warden And The Wolf King where Janner and Kal are running through the ruins of Castle Throg, being chased by Fangs, literally screaming the lyrics of "The Cliffs At Castle Rock" as a defense against the monsters.
They're not even on key. They might have missed some of the words. Leeli would have cringed, and they both know it.
But it's the song that saves them. The old song, the beauty of music that has stood the test of time--it doesn't matter how good they are at singing, what matters is the heart. Clinging to something real and true and beautiful in a time of danger and distress. Even that was enough to push back the darkness.
And that, for some reason, is what made me burst into tears.
kalmar wingfeather sure gives new meaning to the phrase "wolfing your food down"
