So I just finished rereading N!OBE and I don't know how I ever shipped Maraly and Kal. I don't understand how I could be this blind. Maraly is obviously a lesbian demigirl. While Kal is, in fact, bi and def crushed on her a teeny bit, it was never going to happen because that child is a blatant lesbian. Nia was probably part of her awakening. She most likely had a little crush on Sara for a couple months. I don't know how I didn't see it before.

I am currently rewriting my modern au, destroying the romantic relationship she had with Kal, and inventing a character to be her enbyfriend. Their name is Robin and they're a nonbinary lesbian who works at Books and Crannies and wants to start a woodcarving business. Thank you for your time.

TIMBER MY BELOVED! (Honestly, all the major Fangs are such good characters even though they are all such evil creatures. E. G. Khrak, Slarb, Swifter, does Nuzzard count?, Ghrool, etc.) He's so cool aggghhhhh I'm going to actually figure out how to draw Fangs now XD

The ANIMATION in this episode is AMAZING HELLO? They NEVER could have pulled off something of this scale before now, I'm so excited to see how much higher quality it's going to get from here because my mind was BLOWN by the battle. They got their Fang budget back with the Grey Fangs and it's glorious 😌 (they lost it in S1E6 amirite)

That one Kimeran's death seemed so major?? Like what was up with that? It was such a big deal. Idk. It's not like it's the most horrible thing anyone's seen so far. But also death is horrible and maybe that's just the point they were trying to make. I do have to say though, the shot of Timber lowering his crossbow was pretty sweet.

All the shots of Timber were sweet. He's so cool. I want to lop his head off.

Thinking about Kalmar* Wingfeather and how he's the epitome of the phenomenon I saw while working in schools a lot that, for lack of better terminology I'll call "the problem child with a heart of gold".

So, I saw this often with what people might kindly refer to as "troubled" children, the ones with bad or less than ideal home situations or diagnosed mental health issues or ADHD, or a mix of all of the above, who act out a lot in school by yelling, hitting teachers, throwing desks and chairs, trying to run away, just generally either ignoring or attacking (literally) authority. And what I noticed was that often these kiddos were the kindest and most understanding of their disabled/autistic peers. They looked out for them, went out of their way to play with and include them, sought them out to talk to and interact with even if they received mixed signals or no response. And I found that fascinating and it tugged at my heartstrings, because it showed me that they really weren't bad kids they just. needed help that the public school system was not equipped to provide.

So, Tink/Kalmar Wingfeather is obviously a little troublemaker, especially in the first two books. He loves dragging his brother into adventures, he doesn't want to be king, doesn't want to listen to Janner, he literally runs away from his responsibilities to try and become a Strander and ends up turning into a Fang. Later in the Hollows Janner has to get into a fight to stop Kalmar from getting into one because he's impulsive and feisty as any 11-year-old boy can be.

And yet.

This is also the Kalmar Wingfeather who found the injured cloven who had supposedly tried to attack his home and had compassion on it and took care of it for MONTHS despite the physical/mental toll it was taking on him and the danger this put him in. This is the Kalmar Wingfeather who called the cloven and the Fangs home to Anniera so they could heal. This is the Kalmar Wingfeather who carried a broken Fang out of a dungeon because he saw himself in her. Because his heart is so kind and loving to those who need it, he can be the sweetest, gentlest child with those who are broken. He looks at them and sees himself and his heart opens to them.

Also, now that I'm thinking about it, this applies to Maraly too. She's also a fierce, feisty child, a former Strander, a bit of a wild child, if you will. The girl who screams, "I don't want safety, I want Gammon!", the abused little child who had to fight for survival from day one, who you'd think would be cold and harsh but she's not okay, because I remember how KIND she was to Artham in Dugtown after he lost his mind again and how gentle and how she just wanted to help him.

Idk, I think it's just, it's such an interesting thing, and the fact that it pops up more than once in the Wingfeather Saga is so fascinating to me.
