Winifred comes to some realisations when she compares her courtship with Gilbert to Gilbert's courtship with Anne.

Everyone keep saying that Gilbert is stupid, that he has to choose Anne over Winnie, and that it is obvious, and so on..

But remember at this time Gilbert still doesn’t know that Anne actually loves him. He thinks that it’s only him, and he would never, and I tell you NEVER force a girl/woman (especially not Anne) into a relationship she doesn’t want. He is doing this for his own future yes, but I think he’s doing some of it for Anne too. Like she told him to marry Winnie, so why wouldn’t he?

On the other hand I’m still hoping for the “I don’t want to marry you Winnie, I’m in love with someone else”, but yeah:)))
