Surviving Everything Life Throws at You, Don't Live in Fear, Live in Peace Going Forward

Genesis is normally thought of as the book of beginnings.  That is a good description and mostly true, but not everything in Genesis is a beginning, for example, the last of Genesis also includes some endings.

 As we come to the end of Genesis, Jacob passes.  He had survived everything life threw at him for 147 years, (Gen.47:28).  Think about all the ups and downs in his life over that long span and he survived it all, every single thing, until his last day came. Jacob, like everyone else, kept his appointment with death, but that's ok, because none of us live forever in this life.  Even Enoch and Elijah left this world behind.  No one stays here forever.  There is a time to be born, and a time to die.  That is the cycle of life.

 Another ending at the close of Genesis, is the ending of the past.  It was time for Joseph's brothers to bury the past.  Joseph's brothers were living in fear because of how they had been so cruel to Joseph.  They feared that after Jacob died, Joseph would take his revenge.  The brothers need to bury the past, put it behind them, so that they can live at peace going forward.  

 Of course, we all need to learn how to put an end to the influence of the past.  The way to do that will vary from person to person, but a person cannot live at peace today if he is living in dread of the past.  

 And last, we notice the passing of Joseph.  The life of Joseph is a fantastic series of ups and downs.  His life hit some of the lowest lows.  We all have ups and downs, but not everyone's life reaches the harsh depths that Joseph experience.  I believe we all go through our own valley of the shadow of death, but I also think that some valleys are darker then others.  In my opinion, Joseph's valley was really, really, dark.  

 But Joseph survived everything life threw at him for 110 years.  Yes, I know he eventually died, but we all eventually die.  That is just the way life works.  The trick is to keep your focus through all the trials of life.

 The endings in Genesis happened about 4000 years ago, but life kept moving forward, year after year, with new beginnings, more endings, and the cycle keeps repeating, until here we are today in our various stages of ending and beginnings.  

 I personally think, out of all the times in history, we live in a great time and a great country. I don't know about you, but I plan on enjoying it as long as it last.
