Last summer I went to Winshape Camp, a Christian based summer camp hosted by my church. There was this little shit in my group named Raphael (or maybe spelled Rafael, you never know) who shoved a fiber optic up my ear.

Oh the adventure this year has brought. It started out rather uneventful. I was starting my last semester in college, I was working at Chick-Fil-A, and had just decided that I would come up to North Carolina for graduate school. Graduating college was a whirlwind…everything that was ahead of me was unknown. Packing up all of my belongings. Leaving Tallahassee, a city that will forever have my heart. Leaving the friends that got me through so much. It was scary.

Just a few weeks later, I was traveling to Winshape; a camp that I heard was amazing but was still such a mystery to me. Those weeks crawled by initially, then flew by faster than I could take hold of. The Lord radically changed my heart. He showed me that in all of the unknowns we face, He remains constant. That when we don’t know what purpose we serve or why we’re even here, He has a plan that surpasses all understanding. Winshape ended and the lack of purpose I felt intensified. To go from an environment where you know that everything you’re doing serves a purpose to a state in which you don’t know a soul can be…humbling, in the worst kind of way.

The move to North Carolina was very rough for me. I didn’t know anyone. I didn’t have any connections. No ties. Starting graduate school made me highly question my intelligence..who am I kidding? That hasn’t ended yet. Again, God taught me about utter reliance. I could not have gotten through the first month or two of this semester on my own. It was very very important that I leaned on Him and depended on what He would have me do. I knew that getting plugged into a church was a must. And wouldn’t you know, God led me to Crossroads. Crossroads provided so many friends, so much growth, and so many opportunities for connection. Crossroads helped Raleigh become home for me.

I also met Blake this summer. For one of the first times, I fell into a relationship that I did not expect in the least. A guy that loves the Lord, serves Him relentlessly, and has shown me what a woman of God deserves to be treated like. I fell for someone hundreds of miles away. This relationship is truly teaching me how to trust in the Lord even when all of the odds are stacked against you. When you tell someone that you’re in a long-distance relationship, you either get a half-hearted “Aw, good for you”, a story about how their long-distance relationship fell apart followed by a “But I’m sure that won’t happen to you”, or a very rare story about a relationship that was made better when accompanied by distance. Regardless of the odds, regardless of the difficulties… this man makes every mile worth it.

I have finally learned that what happens is not up to me, but up to the Lord. Trusting in and surrendering to the Lord is much easier said than done. Really taking ahold of this, though, can and will change you. I can say with full confidence that I am a different person than I was at the beginning of this year. Not all of the lessons He’s been teaching me have been easy, but I wouldn’t give them up for anything.
