“On a clear winter’s evening The crescent moon
And the round squirrels’ nest In the bare oak
Are equal planets.”
— Anne Porter, “Winter Twilight,” Living Things: Collected Poems (Steerforth, 2006)
The 1970s "Blue Period." Nothing captures the festive spirit quite like the crushing realization that your heating bill for a drafty Victorian mansion is about to exceed your annual salary. Here we see two tiny couriers making a break for it with the last of the holiday rations, while Dad stands on the porch in a tan parka, wondering if he actually turned the stove off or if the house is just naturally that "glowy." It’s a classic scene: frozen toes, questionable fashion choices in synthetic nylon, and the looming presence of ominous pine trees that definitely aren't plotting anything.
