Sam stands at his bathroom sink, splashing water on his face to rid his eyes of leftover slumber, and looks up into the mirror.
Every day, he finds himself older than he ever remembers getting.
Flecks of gray sprinkle his goatee, a leftover look reminiscent of his golden years, and a small roll of his tummy peeks out over the elastic of his briefs.
He stretches out his neck and his back, the cracking noises louder every day, and rubs at the spot beneath his shoulder that always seems just a little sore these days. It’s not enough to stop him from going on his morning run—even if it is more of a fast walk/jog these days on account of his poor knees—but it is enough to make him a little more careful when he stretches.
Strong hands take over the kneading at his shoulder, and Sam relaxes into his husband’s touch, groaning when he thumbs over a problem spot just right. His eyes close for just a moment, appreciating the fact that Bucky knows his body just as well as he does, before he opens them and studies Bucky’s face in the mirror.
Bucky’ll never show his true age, sure, but the weight of the years has run down his face all the same, if at a slower pace than it would anyone else’s. There’s a bit of silver in his short beard to match with Sam’s own, bits of hair near his ears that gleam against the rest.
He wonders how many of the smile lines on Bucky’s face are because of him.

“What do you say? Fake boyfriends?”
Sam should probably say no. But Bucky was giving him these puppy dog eyes. This pleading to help Sam out. And Sam found himself reaching out for Bucky’s face – and squishing it too.
“What the hell? Why not?” said Sam, the both of them beaming, “Fake boyfriend.”
“Fake boyfriend,” grinned Bucky, all smiles and dopey.

They slipped and almost died.
Sam yelped as his feet lost ground, his world tumbling. Bucky clung to Sam as Sam reached desperately for something to slow the fall, taking the bathroom curtains with them. Sam could hear the rings of the curtain snapping off the railing as the curtain fell on top of them.
Sam felt all the air leave him as Bucky fell on top of him. He groaned in the bathtub, wondering who thought it was a good idea to make out there.
Right.
It was sort of Sam.
Sam giggled. Bucky joined him. The both of them snickered half-hard in the bathtub with the curtain on top of them as their water transitioned from hot to warm.
“You okay?” asked Bucky into the bathtub, “Anything hurt?”
“Just my dignity,” said Sam, assessing himself, “I think it might be time to get out of the shower.”
Bucky nodded into Sam’s shoulder.

They called him the Winter Soldier. Sam thought the nickname was super dramatic, even for the CIA. But Sam was not here to critique the agency for its silly naming practices. He was brought on from the FBI to help find the infamous assassin before he hit his next high-profile target.
After two years of hard work, chasing ghosts around the world, and hitting many dead ends, Sam finally finds a lead that brings him face to face with the Winter Soldier. He is nothing like Sam expects. Instead of a cold assassin, he finds a frightened, brainwashed POW and a hell of a lot of conspiracies involving a global intelligence agency.
The Winter Soldier, whose real name may or may not be Barnes, needs Sam’s help to escape the hell he has been trapped in for more years than he can remember. The two men go on the run, using all their combined skills to stay one step ahead of some powerful people. Looking for whatever evidence they can to expose the truth.
Living in close quarters and getting to know Barnes makes it difficult for Sam not to start developing feelings for him. But can those feelings be real when a man who is not even sure of his own name and doesn’t know who he was before he was made into a living weapon? Sam doesn’t know, but what he does know is he has to keep Barnes safe.
