How did you handle ethnicity in winterlocked? Were there regions with specific ethnicites or all just as one?
It sort of became all just as one, but there was more though to it than that. It was a bit sloppily done, especially because I had originally written stuff that was problematic but too central to the plot to change completely. So I had to work around it, and make it as good as possible. I’m fairly certain I wound up making it a mostly non-problematic mix of ethnicities in the region, but I wanted to make sure there were canonical groups outside the ones focused on in the rp.
I really handled it poorly first time around, though, let’s get that out of the way. There was written in racism against people of darker skin tone regardless of race that was just. Sloppy and poorly done and I do not recommend it.
What I did instead was have the three great Kingdoms (Nore, Sol, and the Southern Isles) be melting pots, and an as-yet unmentioned fourth kingdom I’ve been developing privately that, had it been included, would have been comprised of east-Asian inspired fantasy and solely feature FCs of those ethnicities.
Nore was sort of ethnically white due to it being inspired by Norse fantasy, but it was multicultural and multi ethnic. Not as much as it should have been for a work of fiction, but I digress. The city itself was originally a massive Kingdom capital and a trading hub, which meant people from all over the world stopped there before trading with the rest of the kingdom (before the winter storms came and destroyed it of course.)
The Isles were inspired by Arabic and Canaanite mythos, and would have featured people of middle eastern ethnicities (had I not screwed up and casted the royal family as white h a ha)
And Sol, being about half the size of Russia, was a true multi-ethic country. It wasn’t all rolled into one, but multiple groups living under the same ruler, with their own cultures and traditions. Some groups and neighborhoods were all one ethnicity, and some -- especially the big cities -- were as diverse as New York and London.
The Price of Love by Ree von Reeston
After three years at sea, Grigor returns to Nore find his favorite escort-in-training fully grown and ready to begin work. He was expecting refinement, but nothing could have prepared him for her beauty. No longer the gawky and wild girl he left behind, Ruby has become a ravishing and ruthless femme fatale. And he’ll do anything to win her heart.

I'm going to miss Winterlocked so much! There will not be anything like it in my eyes. The depth of the roleplay and the lore was just amazing. You created a world and along with the amazing players, you all created a memory.
Oh wow thank you <33 This made me tear up a little? I just love worldbuilding and wanted to make something that felt like an mmorpg world for writing or something or Idk I’m just so glad you liked it so much. It really means more than I can say
I was always so scared to join Winterlocked. I've been following that roleplay throughout the years it has been through and I will tell you right now that even if it has ended, it'll always be one of the best roleplays here on Tumblr. x
Oh my gosh thank you <333 It makes me sad to hear so many people were intimidated or scared to join, because you see me being all keysmashing and fangirling, and so were most of the members. I was so lucky to have so many amazing members who just wanted to swap headcanons and do silly things next to the serious plots that were going on. Like, there were a few cases here and there of people who did’t feel like they fit in (that I was aware of), but it was usually just because they weren’t on often enough to really feel like they were part of the community that had formed.
Like no joke, I’m still talking to most of the people who were around the last few weeks/months, and I don’t know I’m kind of rambling down memory lane now don’t mind me. It really really means a lot to know that you think so highly of it, though. Thank you for making my day <333

To Carmilla:
I hope you have been well! His Majesty is growing more adventurous by the day. I have a feeling he will take to you almost immediately upon your meeting. Please do not hesitate to visit us both at Mister Piest’s Bakery.
How has business been? Is anyone interesting coming your way, or has it been the same sort of company you can usually speak? And what of your thinking on the Fey? Have you come up with any new theories? I would be honored to stop at the university and do any needed research on your behalf.
Oh! I almost forgot: I am experimenting with a different recipe for the meat pies. It would delight me to no end to hear your thoughts on it. Your thoughts are always awaited with baited breath.
I have enclosed a poem I’ve written as well, if you are interested. It is about you.
I hope I have not taken up too much of your time with this letter.
Best wishes!
Maeve
