“‘Don’t poison the mayor, stop stealing from flower shops, don’t rob banks’, you’re no fun to be around.”
Barrett sat slouched over onto the sticky bar, head in his arms as Kai lectured him. Alcohol sat like a brick in his stomach and behind his eyes, the buzz fading just enough to be both unpleasant and unhelpful in tuning out his captain’s loud voice.
Something slammed down next to his head, successfully making him jump. The barkeep had thrown down his towel, a glare settling onto his wrinkled face.
“No fighting in my bar,” he grouched.
“Fighting would require a response,” Kai placed a heavy hand on Barrett’s shoulder, “and this one is barely coherent enough sober to form a good one.”
No reply came. Bartender Bag of Dicks stared expectantly at them. Kai paid Barrett’s tab and left, the door swinging open to bathe the dim bar in sunlight. He sighed. She was difficult enough to deal with when she wasn’t pissed. And when he was sober. And when someone was there to back him up. It did take perfect circumstances for them to get along, now that he thought about it. He stood. Giving himself a minute to adjust to being upright, he kept a hand on the bar. Once his vision stopped swimming, he followed after her.
“Look, Kai, I didn’t mean to upset you, honest,” Barrett said, taking long strides to catch up with Kai, who was flushed with anger. A vein popped out on her neck.
“Can you repeat even one thing I said to you in there?” Kai whipped around.
“Don’t poison the mayor?” he guessed. “Though I did have good reason for that. That lazy old fu–”
“And?” she cut him off.
“Stop stealing from flower shops. Wix really liked those flowers though, so–”
“And?”
“There’s more?” he said, “I mean, what else have I even done lately?”
“Barrett, you just robbed a bank! A bank! With innocent people inside!”
“Don’t rob banks? Seriously? Everyone will get their money back, the only people that I hurt are the greedy assholes that own the place. I needed it more than them, anyway.”
“You can’t just…” she sighed. “Okay. Alright, I’ll bite. What did you use the money for?”
“See this new jacket?” he gestured to himself, “Material like this isn’t cheap, not to mention the tailoring, and look, it’s lined with fur. Plus, it’s waterproof!”
Kai stood very close to him and whispered in his ear, “Get back to the ship. Now. Before I take your jacket and use it as a doormat.”
“You’re no fun to be around,” Barrett muttered as he walked back to the docks.
im currently trying to name the big ol cult that is a huge aspect of my story, but i cant pin it down!
basically, the cult think mermaids are destroying the Old Ocean Gods that they worship. as such, they’ve invaded a lot of aspects of goverment in various countries and have ties in a lot of places. part of their plan is to gain money doing deep-sea mining and fishing, thus ruining the underwater ecosystem and hurting mermaids.
part of the cult is being a mermaid-hunter. some of them are (bad) pirates. the cult reaches far and wide, to countries floating on water, locked on land, and suspended amongst the clouds. it is a web of lies and poisonous, scummy people.
so i need a name for this cult, and i need a name of the underground organization trying to stop it. and i just can not find the perfect ones! also while im complaining i cant choose a name for the wip which is SO ANNOYING bc im tagging everything as ‘wip ships’ and ill probably just have to keep that as the tag now unless i go back and edit everything
