some legitimate critiques of rian johnson:

- misogynoir (Brick)

- white knighting (Brick)

- lack of queer rep (all)

- a wordless role for a main character played by Rinko Kikuchi (Brothers Bloom)

- thinking that joseph gordon levitt can play a young bruce willis (Looper)

some wtf critiques of rian johnson:

- he did Kelly Marie Tran dirty (he’s the only person associated with Disney who has openly supported her the entire time). be mad about what he did to Rinko Kikuchi ffs.

- he did Finn and Poe’s characters dirty (...it’s a disney film. we’ve had our first queer disney characters for over a decade and they still don’t get more than five lines a movie)

- that he’s a millionaire now. you know what artists don’t like doing? starving.

some difficult to parse critique:

everything that happened to John Boyega. from the moment he popped in the trailer as the first image anyone saw of the new SW, the internet moved against him. and then the movie comes out, and people are queering his relationship with Poe. all controversies disney does not like. so there were three major things counting against him:

1. racist backlash 2. homophobic backlash 3. and the fact that by making a Stormtrooper capable of breaking the mind control, disney was now stuck with the fact that people were humanizing Stormtroopers. the people who need to be disposed of guilt-free in a SW movie, that’s their entire purpose. to have a war, you have to have people to kill. constantly. and the audience can’t be thinking “...wait, why aren’t our good guys saving the Stormtroopers if they’re just programmed? why are they blowing up a Death Star full of them???”

so executives would have handed down their constraints for the next film, and this is where it gets tricky, because rian would have had to incorporate them and we don’t know what we lost because these films were never planned anyway. we don’t know what was downplayed other than the fanon that was generated between TFA and TLJ. rian definitely made a deal with the disney devil because he got his bag and it was big enough to found his own production company.

so rian has culpability, but I think people give directors at disney way more credit than they’re actually allowed. all the massive, tentpole IPs are micromanaged to the point of disintegration (i.e. TROS/Infinity War). there is nothing artistically fulfilling for anyone when a movie is designed by committee. there wasn’t any one person who fucked over John. it was a whole system.
