December 19th.
Guren squints at the calendar on the wall.
“Making faces at the calendar isn’t going to get you out of work any faster,” comes a teasing voice behind him.
He turns slowly, facing Mahiru, who holds out a cup of coffee to him, almost like an offering. A sorry we have to be here all the way until Christmas Eve, maybe.
But Guren doesn’t have a family to go home to for Christmas, really. There’s his dad, but they’ll celebrate the holiday on the day of. Guren’s always thought it was more important for his co-workers with children to be home as often as they can be during the season, anyway. He’s working extra hours this week to compensate for those who’ve requested time off in order to be home. As far as he knows, Mahiru is doing the same.
He accepts the coffee with a short sigh. “No, I’m just thinking...I haven’t done any of my shopping yet, but I don’t have another day off until Christmas.”
Mahiru comes to stand beside him. She frowns at the calendar. “Hey, me too!” She looks up to him, grinning. “Guess we’re stuck together for a while. At least I get to spend to the season with my family, though.”
The benefit of being a Hiragi, Guren supposes, is the tug that they all get in the family business. Sans for Shinya and Shinoa—the latter of whom just refuses to work an office job, and the former of whom is far too young—the Hiragi siblings all work under their father. Kureto and Seishiro are a little higher up in the office hierarchy than Mahiru, but Mahiru always says that she doesn’t want anything more than what she has. She likes working alongside Guren, she says. He thinks she might be a little insane, but he can’t really complain about it, considering she’s the only one around here who can consistently make his coffee the way he likes it.
“Is that really such a good thing?” Guren muses.
She laughs. “Nah, my favourite sibling is at home. But I’m sure Shinya will find a way to make the day special for her. Anyway, if you need to do some shopping, you could just get your friends to go for you, right? I’m sure Shinya would be happy to go pick up some gifts for you.”
Guren shakes his head. “Last time I talked to Shinya, he told me he was buying us matching Christmas sweaters. I’ve been too afraid to call again.”
