Series: Part 4 of Foray into the Supernatural
Summary:
Witches don't get to pick their guardians; they're chosen for them.
And while the idea seemed like a good one at first, the Novak twins had no idea what they were getting themselves into.
Human Dean is affectionate, but not openly so. In public he’ll hold hands, give a peck on the cheek, but not much more than that. Behind closed doors there’s a bit more; he’ll let the twins hold him or curl around him in bed, but he doesn’t initiate it. When he shifts to his familiar form, a husky with the same green eyes as his human self, it’s a completely different story. After the twins have performed whatever ritual they were working on, Dean becomes a total lap dog. He follows them (1/2)
around the house, rubs against their legs, jumps onto their laps if they sit down, and licks their faces. He rolls onto his back so they can scratch his belly, falls asleep on their feet as they watch TV. Some days Dean’ll shift into his animal form just because he wants to cuddle. The twins don’t comment on it, just share a look whenever Dean pads into the living room as a dog. He’s not fooling anyone, but hey, if this is how he’s comfortable the twins aren’t going to complain. (2/2)
The night before had been a new moon, and so Castiel and Jimmy had been up for several hours picking herbs. This was why, at around two in the afternoon, they were both still in bed when someone knocked on their door.
At first, they both ignored it, but as the knocking got more vehement Jimmy stumbled out of bed to answer, knowing that his brother wouldn’t get up unless the house was falling apart around them. Maybe not even then, depending on how tired he still was.
Jimmy walked to the door, grabbing a robe on the way. Whoever was on the other side was still knocking furiously.
“Rude,” Jimmy mumbled, irritated, and pulled the door open.
What greeted him was perhaps the most handsome man he’d ever seen. Jimmy swallowed, irritation forgotten, as his eyes instinctively trailed over the stranger’s features, taking it all in. The green eyes, plush lips, the dusting of freckles and the light flush in his cheeks, the cat-like ears… nestled… on the top of his head?
“Huh.”
One of the ears twitched. “You James or Castiel Novak?”
“I’m Jimmy,” Jimmy corrected, still staring mesmerized.
“I was told you guys are the ones who brew the potions I sell.”
“Very possible.” Jimmy shook his head, finally managing to tear his eyes away from the top of the stranger’s head. “I take it this was accidental?”
The stranger gave him an impressive glare. “Do I look like I’m happy about this?”
You look kinda cute with those, actually, Jimmy didn’t say, because he valued his health, and he wasn’t sure this guy had a sense of humor about his situation.
“Just tell me you have some sort of antidote on hand.” The stranger sniffled, and it was then that Jimmy noticed how red his eyes were.
He bit back a smile. “Are you… allergic to cats?”
“Kind of,” the stranger admitted miserably. “Are you gonna let me in or not?”
Jimmy stepped to the side, allowing the stranger inside and closing the door behind him. “I’m not sure we have an antidote ready, but it shouldn’t take much time to brew one up.”
The stranger nodded absentmindedly. His eyes were darting around the cabin, lingering on the herbs hung up to dry in the kitchen nook.
“I think I might have something for your allergies,” Jimmy added, “but I’m gonna need a little something in return.”
“What?”
“Your name.”
The stranger flushed. His ears flattened, making him look even more abashed (and adorable). “I’m Dean.”
“Pleased to meet you, Dean.” Jimmy walked past him, into the kitchen.
They had a few bottles of medical potions, meant for an array of lesser ailments, stacked in one of the lower cabinets. While he looked, he heard the stairs creaking as Castiel descended. Probably still only in his boxers.
“Oh!”
Jimmy grinned to himself and straightened. Sure enough, there was Cas by the foot of the stairs, nearly naked. He looked surprised, but not particularly frazzled - he’d never been all that much for modesty. Dean, however, had gone beet red.
“Sorry!” he said, quickly averting his eyes. “I didn’t know- your brother let me in!”
“Dean,” Jimmy interrupted, walking back from behind the kitchen counter, “meet Cas. Cas, Dean. He had a mishap with one of our potions and needs some help setting it right.”
“I see,” Castiel said, eyes curiously examining the ears on top of Dean’s head.
Jimmy’s grin widened as from this distance, he finally noticed that Dean had a tail as well. It was lowered, the tip of it curled up as if in embarrassment.
“For your allergies,” Jimmy told Dean, handing him a small bottle.
“Thanks,” Dean muttered, still flushed.
He accepted the bottle and downed it in one sip. The effects were immediate - of course, Jimmy had been the one to brewed it. Dean smiled, eyes seemingly involuntarily slipping shut as he let out a low, rumbling sound.
He was purring. Jimmy glanced at Castiel, who looked about as delighted as he felt.
“May I?” Castiel asked, stepping closer to Dean.
Dean cracked one eye open, the noise letting up. “Huh?”
“If you’ll let me, I’d like to examine your ears.”
“Uh.” Dean swallowed. “I guess?”
Castiel smiled in thanks and raised his hand, carefully cupping one of Dean’s ears. He tugged lightly at it, stopping when Dean twitched and shot him a wounded look. He tilted his head, a look of intense concentration on his face, as he began to scratch behind Dean’s ear.
Immediately, Dean started purring again, leaning his head into Castiel’s hand. Jimmy walked up to them, unable to resist joining in. Dean sure didn’t seem to mind, as the purring got louder and he practically melted under their touch.
Then, he suddenly snapped out of it, eyes shooting open. Jimmy and Castiel moved their hands away, both taking the hint.
“Sorry,” Dean said, looking embarrassed. “It’s just, I’m having a hard enough time not rubbing myself all over you without you-” his eyes widened, “not like that, just… you don’t smell like me.”
Jimmy blinked.
“And you should,” Dean concluded in a quiet yet somehow stubborn voice.
Castiel hummed. “Interesting. So it’s not just physical characteristics, then? Your mind is affected as well.”
“Can we go back to the part where you wanna rub yourself all over us?” Jimmy asked.
Judging by the twin glares he received from Dean and Castiel, he guessed not.
He sighed. “We’ll figure this out. But it might take a few days.”
“You can stay here until then,” Castiel added. “If you’d like.”
Dean went even redder, eyes darting between Castiel and Jimmy, but he nodded.
Maybe rubbing wasn’t completely out of the question.
Summary: When casting in the woods near his home, Castiel collides (quite literally) with a familiar named Dean. The two bond instantly. “Is that an ocelot?”
Castiel hummed softly as he walked up the wooden steps. “I don’t know.” His eyes unfocused a bit as if he were paying attention to something else, then he nodded absently before returning his focus to Jimmy. “Yes, apparently that’s what he is. He’s impressed that you knew that.
Jimmy shrugged as he stepped back to let Castiel pass into the cottage. “Animals are kinda my thing.” He closed the door shut behind them and whirled around to face his brother once more. “The real question is, where did you find an ocelot? You usually find those out west, not around here.” Jimmy dared to take a step closer and found himself staring into intense green eyes that seemed to be blinking sleepily.
“He’s a familiar.” Castiel said, shifting from foot to foot before hefting the cat back up into his arms. The basket held in the crook of his elbow tilted precariously.
Jimmy’s eyes snapped up to Castiel and took him in. His brother was also chewing his lip, a sure sign that he was nervous about something and whatever that was, he was holding it back. Jimmy’s heart sped a little in response, Castiel was calm itself personified so the fact that he was nervous told him something was going on. “Castiel, why do you have a familiar?”
