After they become boyfriends, Ilya tells Shane that he actually fantasized about him before they first met. He'd been studying Shane's tapes, knowing they were gonna be facing each other soon, and it kind of turned him on how good Shane was.

Then he looked him up online and saw pictures of him and thought he was so pretty (even though Shane's freckles weren't even visible in the pictures). So a couple of days before their game, when it was late and Ilya was in bed and feeling kind of horny, he started thinking about how good it would feel to beat Shane. Re childhoods friends au I imagine like a girl pursuing Shane and he's like okay she liked me first/she really wants ME so Obviously she won't cheat on me with Ilya. But as it turns out the boys aren't subtle and she just knew that dating Shane was the easiest way to get Ilya's attention (that's who she really wanted)

(Idk what her motivation is for going about it the hard way maybe she tried hitting on Ilya first but he didn't care hmm i wonder why. Or maybe she just likes causing problems and wow these boys in her class have Such Good emotional warfare potential)

She doesn't really think that, she just says it to piss him off and to have the last word before she storms out, but it kind of sets a bomb off in Ilya's head because fuck, do all the girls know he's thinking about Shane while he's fucking them???

So they're alone in Shane's house and Ilya brought a bottle of vodka he stole from Alexei (which Alexei is gonna try to kick his ass about later), because he says Shane needs to practice drinking since the last party they went to he ended up throwing up in the bushes outside.

And they're taking shots and playing video games and then at some point the computer is off and they're passing the bottle back and forth. Ilya is watching Shane's lips wrapping around the head of the bottle and noticing how red and wet they've gotten and it's giving him this funny feeling in his stomach. And he asks Shane if he's ever made out with a girl for real, like not in a game of spin the bottle, and Shane tells him to fuck off and Ilya asks again and Shane finally admits yes but he doesn't think he did it right (because it didn't feel right because he wasn't attracted to her because he's gay).

So Ilya says he can show him how to do it right. Shane tells him to fuck off again and Ilya says no really, it's no big deal, it would just be practice. Which is all the cajoling Shane needs because his desires are just a little bit stronger than his fear of those desires.

They make out and it's objectively not great. It's very wet and messy and uncoordinated because they're two drunk teenagers and Ilya may be more experienced but he's not that experienced. But they're both very into it, and Shane keeps making all these little noises that make Ilya feel dizzy and he tells himself it's just because Shane sounds a little bit like a girl.

It ends when Shane realizes he's hard and pulls away suddenly terrified that Ilya might notice. He thanks Ilya awkwardly and they go back to drinking, and maybe turn on a movie to distract themselves. And in the morning they both pretend not to remember and they never ever talk about it again!

they're both in denial! but i do think ilya would still hook up with a guy first (maybe at age 18/19?) and shane would be unreasonably mad about it and claim it's because he's worried for ilya. ilya would tell him it's no big deal, like just the thought of shane hooking up with a guy doesn't fill him with incandescent rage.

(importantly, shane doesn't ever actually hook up with another guy. ilya just imagines it when he sees shane around other men and gets angry about it.)

i actually don't have a concrete answer for this! but it takes them way longer than it should, ilya fucking shane's gf is definitely not the last straw.

if they're drafted by the mhl in this au the distance will keep them apart for longer. but if they're not hockey players they would go to the same college, and their old patterns would start to unravel pretty quick because it all gets just so much more intense without parental supervision. in that case, they'd probably be engaged (and obnoxious about it) before the end of freshman year.
