I feel like death. I feel like death warmed over. I feel like bleeding, pustulous death that has been shoved into a dirty microwave and nuked back to the temperature of circulating blood.

Yup.

If anyone out there wants to post some shit to the witchcuntt tag and see if you can make a very grumpy, very emotionally hurt (GODDAMNIT) witch smile, then I offer you that challenge from behind a cloud of cigarette smoke.

Hopefully I'll be more fun tomorrow.

A Betrayal [Mythology Monday on a Saturday]

Wait...didn't I start MM last Saturday? Oops. Seems to be a running theme. And don't forget: Y'all can submit your myths to my blog for posting.

She holds her twisted claw limply to her breastbone, the fight gone from her. In the corner is shadow, and nothing more. Her hands hurt from being clenched into fists for so long and she curls and uncurls long-taloned fingers, feeling the burn of pain deep in her bones.

She regards the shadows with wary eyes, and knowing nothing is there, speaks anyway.

"You were a fool and you know it," she mutters to someone who is no longer there, "That's what hurt you the most. Not my departure from your life. Not the end of something you once thought beautiful. It was the fact that you forgot. You forgot what I am. Down to the very marrow in my bones, I am something you knew you should not touch.

"You saw it in me and it drew you like a moth to a flame. And stupidly you forgot just how much it--"

She stops, mid sentence, attempting to get her bearings back. Her skeletal frame rises from the chair and she begins to pace like a caged animal--muscle and sinew moving beneath the skin of tense shoulders.

"The reason all good mothers tell their children not the play with the stove is they know. They know the same fire that warms the hearth can burn down the whole house if one is not careful. And you simply forgot that fact.

"Fire is not to be toyed with. "

Softer still, she mumbles, "Not to be played with. Or perhaps you didn't forget. Perhaps you liked the danger. Yes, I think that's exactly it, isn't it? I saw the look in your eyes when you would set me upon enemies too great to harm with your own small fists. Too big to topple with just your frail voice. You saw me as a tool in your arsenal. You became an arsonist. Setting me on anything you found unsavory or too hard to deal with. And I let you because..."

She trails off, attempting to find her words. "Because you weren't afraid of me. You didn't fear me, like the others. And you didn't regard me with the curiosity of a scientist with his lab rats, as so many others did.

"But I can't believe now that it was love. Because it wasn't. You had a fascination with danger and that's what I was to you--dangerous. A she-beast. You were tickled pink, watching me gnash my teeth and claw at the sky.

"But like a dog that's been kicked too many times, when you struck the final blow you found my teeth at your neck and suddenly my antics weren't so funny anymore. You remembered, finally, that wild animals are just that--wild.

"So. Keep your nose out of my den and I won't stalk the fields around your house. Deal?"
