There are lights, now, in the night forest;
My mother told me so one day
She came home at last from years long lost
As their dim glows had lit her way
There are lights, now, in the night forest;
I saw them myself while hauling pails
Down to the woodside stream:
It was as deep blue as ocean water
But as fleeting as a dream
There are lights, now in the night forest;
The well had snapped and crunched and bowed
So I went for water at the rill.
Workers sent by the Duke - they never showed.
My thirsty feet carried me still.
But this time I passed through root and tree,
The night forest itself was guiding me
There are lights, now, in the night forest;
When the Duke's men came they bought no tools.
Just shields lined up in a grim metal wall:
They had come with a warning - ha! The fools
Said the forest would gobble and swallow us all!
But still we watched the forest gleam...
A night blue light, a moonlike beam.
We all stared now, adjusting to the sight
Of the woods radiating the darkest light
There are lights, now, in the night forest:
Just enough glow for pure eyes to see,
So the Duke's boys could never find our new home,
Not after our silent insurgency
That's why there are lights in the night forest now:
The forest was lonely, and so were we.
