okay so heres my not super great or coherant review of The Witcher (2019)
so lets start with things i like: women arent copy-pasted personalities on slightly different bodies. they tend to have more depth and are more well rounded than a lot of media out there. sexual assault, while mentioned, is never shown on screen. so far the bar is really low but hey. humanizing people who have been treated badly or as monsters is nice too so thats a plus. character interactions (for the most part) are nice and enjoyable.
it was interesting certainly, i was entertained while i watched it and i did cry a couple of times and i did feel attached to at least a few characters. it made me laugh and it didnt feel like 8 hours of content, it went by very quickly.
soooo...heres what i didnt like (ill try to be spoiler free): boobs. so many boobs. boob windows, boobs out, sex scenes and non-sex scenes alike i was just. so fucking SICK of seeing naked women all the time. characters of color are used to advance plot and be accessories to the white characters development (with the sort of exception of yennefer, but her story has problems in and of itself). the plot was so complicated and there are so many things that to me, someone who has never interacted with witcher media aside from the show, made the viewing experience frustrating. i should say that when i say complicated i dont mean that it was necessarily hard to follow when i knew what timeline we were in. but because we were following 3 different people at 3 different times it was...hard. if you missed a line or two of dialogue you were lost as to where in the timeline you were. and yennefer.....her arc revolving around being a monster bc she cant have children...dont like that!
it felt like there were so many things left unanswered, and im not silly enough as to think that they should have answered Everything, but it long passed being mysterious and became very frustrating. the way they handled the timelines and the lack of map made things confusing and made the experience less enjoyable since we didnt ever know Where or When the fuck we were.
overall id personally give it a solid 5/10
