thinking about lawrence. about how he held adam. crawled over to him to cup his face and promise. thinking about “we’re gonna be ok?” “i wouldn’t lie to you.” about how lawrence couldn’t keep his promise, no matter how badly he wanted to and “i myself, whenever i close my eyes, i see adams corpse.” thinking about. ‘eventually something you love is going to be taken away. and then you will fall to the floor crying. and then, however much later, it is finally happening to you: you’re falling to the floor crying thinking, “i am falling to the floor crying," but there's an element of the ridiculous to it - you knew it would happen and, even worse, while you're on the floor crying you look at the place where the wall meets the floor and you realize you didn't paint it very well.’
But Chris wouldn’t, not when the image of Devon sobbing his heart out was still so vivid in his mind. That zombie-wanna-be was going to hear a piece of his mind, and if Devon got upset about it, so be it, the wolf would deal with that later. Now though, he made his way towards the graveyard, where he knew Adam worked at.
The place was empty and reeked of him and someone else - a vampire - who Chris assumed was this so called Samuel. From there, it was quite easy to track both their scents to Adam’s place. So far the story checked out, he assumed, with them both going to Adam’s house after work, but there was still a lot more to uncover.
Once he was sure he was in front of the right door, Chris knocked, hearing commotion from the other side as someone walked closer. The person stopped right in front of the door and Chris was able to recognize the smell of vampires, that should be Samuel.
“I know you’re in there” he said to the closed door “And you better open that door or I swear to god I’ll tear it down.“
There was a moment where the man was making up his mind and then the door clicked opened. However, Samuel wasn’t there.
“Adam?” Chris stopped in shock as his mind worked overtime to connect the dots.
The former reaper sighed, defeated. “Come in, Chris”
Adam knew he must’ve looked like death incarnate, but Chris’ face made him think he was much worse. It took him a moment too long to follow the vampire into his house and Adam closed the door behind them, locking it just in case Devon was waiting somewhere.
He probably wasn’t, but Adam couldn’t risk it.
The vampire winced though, when he turned to find Chris so close, the smell of wet dog filling his nose. Chris bit back a chuckle, crossing his arms over his chest.
“You don’t smell like roses either, you know?”
“I’m sorry, I’m... still getting used to this” Adam apologized, nodding towards the couch so they could sit down and talk, taking a seat on the couch furthest away from the wolf.
There was a moment of silence between them where the host pondered about offering him some tea, but he chose against it. Instead, Adam cleared his throat when it started to get awkward, asking the only thing he cared about “How is Devon?”
Chris frowned.
“How do you think he is?“ the wolf huffed “You know how he feels about people cheating, you of all people shouldn’t-“
“I didn’t cheat on him” Adam cut him off, suddenly looking very stressed, hands curled into fists “Nothing happened. He- He connected the dots by himself, but they were wrong, I-“ His eyes looked for Chris’ and the wolf was surprised at how vividly ambar they looked, desperate almost “You’d know if I was lying. Right?“
Chris paused. Usually he’d notice a lie because of inconsistent heartbeats, but the man in front of him didn’t have one. Not a single heartbeat for him to hear.
“What happened then?“ he asked instead of answering.
Adam sighed “I did some things I... shouldn’t have, as a reaper“ the man said getting up and stretching himself, clearly upset “They broke my contract, which left me... well, it left me dead.“
“Dead?”
“Dead“ he repeated “My coworker, bless his heart, he’s a vampire. He found me and saved me by... well, by turning me“ Adam gestured towards himself, defeated “There’s no monkeypox, I’m not contagious, I’m just-“
There was another sigh as he ran his pale fingers through his own hair “I can’t put Devon in danger, and right now I can’t be 100% sure how I’d act around him” he swallowed thickly, looking away “I haven’t been around any human since that happened”
Chris paused.
“You haven’t fed?”
Adam shook his head, silent.
“Now that’s dumb.“
The vampire was taken aback by that and he looked up with a frown “I beg your pardon?”
“You’re gonna get sick if you don’t feed“
“I’ve been having... a more human-friendly alternative“
Chris bit back a laugh “Animal’s blood?” Adam nodded, confused, Chris chuckled “What? I’ve watched Twilight, I know how vegan vampires work”
Adam groaned in frustration of being called a vegan again. Inside, though, he was relieved Chris seemed so willing to listen.
“You understand why I can’t tell him then?“
Chris nodded.
“You promess not to tell him?”
The wolf bit down his bottom lip, nodding once more.
As another awkward silence started to stretch between them, Chris got to his feet “Okay, fine, I’ll cover for you.” he said, as if they had been having a conversation this whole time.
“...I’m sorry what?”
Chris turned back, pointing a finger directly at Adam’s face.
“But if you make him cry like that again, I swear to god Adam, you’re a dead man“ The British gave him a little smile. I am already dead. Chris groaned when he caught up to it “Oh come on! You know what I meant!”
“Yes, yes, I get it, I feel fully threatened, believe me” Adam nodded, but there was a resemblance of a smile on his sunken face. Almost hopeful. “Thank you, Chris. Really.“
“Don’t mention it” Chris waved him off, walking towards the door and then turning back, suddenly blushed “No, really, don’t mention it. Devon has no idea I came here today. Don’t. Mention. It.”
“I won’t” the vampire laughed now and Chris was able to catch a glimpse of his fangs peaking out, his eyes automatically glowing blue, a low growl rumbling in his chest. Adam’s smile faded. “Sorry, I’m still getting the hang of it.”
Chris seemed just as much uncomfortable about it, now having noticed his own behavior. Stupid instincts.
“ ¿no? ¿y entonces a quién? porque eran las cuatro de la mañana “ intenta mantenerse seria, como si de verdad lo estuviese regañando, pero una sonrisa divertida se forma en sus labios y la delata “ ¿acaso te acuerdas de la mitad de las cosas que me dijiste? “
