+ Ava + / Photographer
1 . Who is Ava ? Ava is, in all honesty, an extreme case of organized chaos—not in a quirky or random kind of way, but I’m just really indecisive about most things that I like to do. Ava is the hippie flower-girl who gardens on weekends, paints portraits, and meditates Hare Krsna, but Ava is also the pseudo-urban street rat who skateboards in tie dye, slurs like a Californian, and laughs like Seth Rogen. Ava believes in embracing the beauty of the Earth, but Ava also believes in setting it ablaze. Sometimes the flowers that surround me have thorns. Sometimes the thorns around me hold flowers. I really hate it sometimes, my ability to be so indecisive. But in the end I can say that I never lived life in a straight line, at least. I am whoever I feel like in that moment of time, I’m an impulse.
2. What are some favorite things about being a photographer? Photography, in one way, is a poem in motion. It’s a beautiful thing to be able to capture something that would take stanzas of writing to portray with no words needed. Photography shows people who sprint through our fast paced world at a slower pace, forever frozen in time, portraying their raw emotions that are so profound that you are able to feel something just by looking. It’s recording time and emotions through images, it’s art. Another great thing about photography is that everywhere you go and everything you do is an opportunity for a great photo. Whether I’m in my garden or at a skate park, everything shows its true colors. And I believe that my indecisive personality greatly helps with that. Beauty is wherever you decide and once I decided that art is everywhere, I enjoyed photography a lot more.
3. Who do you wanna photography in the future? I think my ultimate dream within the photography sphere would be to photograph musicians or live music, in general. I’ve done photography for a few musicians already and it is one of the greatest feelings for me to be able to capture a musician completely absorbed in whatever they are doing on stage.
4. What are your favorite things to photograph . ( action, landscape, portrait , ect) Besides musicians, something I really enjoy photographing is scenic and urban areas. I think as humans, we have a tendency to forget the true beauty of our surroundings, a lot of times. Whenever I have a terrible day, sometimes the only thing that will cheer me up is the ever changing color of the sky or the view from the top of a skyscraper. I’m extremely guilty of romanticizing everyday life and often my favorite type of photography involves simple things, like the bus stop in the morning or the first cup of coffee.I’m a strong believer in the “enjoy the little things” movement and what better way to be even more cheesy with it than to photograph it?
5. What is your BEST photograph you have taken .? Well you got me there. Because of that whole indecisive thing, I narrowed it down to three photographs, but I really like them all. Two photos I took at a Lorde concert while volunteering with the photography crew at the Austin City Limits Music Festival and the other I took one day out of a school window at 5 am. Lorde was really a wild spirit and it was lovely to see her jump around and mess with her mane of hair, but you can imagine how hard it was to get a solid still shot. The full shot was a godsend and I was thrilled because of its overall presence and energy. My only regret with the long shot photo is its lack of focus, but hey, if I made them into posters I bet you I could have made money off of many desperate teenage girls,at the time. The MCU shot was really great to capture because around this time, she was talking to the crowd about growing up and she sounded very close to crying because of how strong she felt about everything she was taking in and giving out so I could definitely feel the emotions within it. I really like the scenic photo because, like I was talking about earlier, it was extremely beautiful to see and even though I was extremely tired at the time, I would have never noticed if I never looked out the window. I also like the contrast the photo shows: the beauty of nature seen from within white brick walls and fluorescent lighting. It encourages me to always be aware of the outdoors and to embrace it profoundly.
6 which photographers influenced you,and how did they influence your thinking , photographing.? As being one myself, I say “power to the amateur photographer.” It’s really amateur photography that influences me and still inspires me because it shows that you don’t need to have a materialistic sort of aspect within photography in order to capture something beautiful. One photographer that has inspired me throughout many years is Richard Avedon, specifically his project called “In the American West.” In many ways, he was the original “Humans of New York.” What I used to do was look throughout his photography and write stories based off of the person in the photo. All of the photos were without caption, context, or names. One thing I always dream about besides being a photographer is being a writer and in many ways, they coexist perfectly. A photo is writing without words and writing is a photo without seeing. So Richard Avedon really made me appreciate the art in showing, not telling
7. What’s next for Ava .? Ha, well you tell me. Thinking in short terms, what’s next is joining small organizations as a photographer or maybe joining photography classes throughout the summer. Thinking in long terms, well, who knows. The main objective right now is to keep taking to photography, to get better. Maybe to actually have people like my photography would be a good start, too. I need to establish a good base to work with and it won’t necessarily be easy, but its better than waiting for a miracle.
