cool awesome headcanon that I think would suit withnail: yeah he's romantically attracted to marwood but ALSO he's incredibly romance repulsed. hates all kinds of PDA that extends beyond a pat on the back or the shoulder. shudders in disgust when he thinks of anything remotely romantic. took one look at his scruffy short nervous wreck of a flatmate and fell so deeply in love that he's actually sickened by the extent of it. tries to act in ways that push marwood away but also regrets it so so deeply every time.

so i was thinking a lot about this post the other day, and talking about it with a friend, and we formulated a list the points in each side's favor. i maintain that they switch, but if pressed i would say withnail tops. for the purposes of this, you can consider top to also mean dominant. obligatory disclaimer, i know That's Not How That Works.

Withnail:

maintains/adds to the canon power dynamic (in that Withnail holds the power)

Marwood's whole thing of always standing behind/under him kind of makes it seem like he wants to bottom

(hc) more sexually experienced

pathetic Marwood (?)

"pushes gold digger angle" (in that Withnail sometimes provides financially for Marwood, and this would be another thing he's "giving" him)

could be framed as Withnail taking advantage of Marwood, which we all know has a canon basis

Marwood:

subverts/switches the canon power dynamic

"bratty Withnail means a lot to me"

he's more likely to be sober when they have sex

adds to how he does all the work in the relationship

he's got all that bottled up anger...

The kind of relationship that you can interpret and which way really, but I like thinking they're a QPR because they just come off as so aspec to me. The film doesn't really concern itself with sexual interests/plot points for either of them (apart from one that's nonconsensual and one-sided from another character). The director stated the lack of heterosexual romantic interests in the film was because the characters are (paraphrasing here) "too poor to have girlfriends", but to me they're just in the world's most toxic QPR that explodes anyone else who gets in their general vicinity with any sort of romantic intent towards them.
