I’m rewatching Yugioh. I totally forgot about Witty Phantom, but remember liking him when I was a kid bc he was an elf and I liked elves. Haha.

Even setting aside magic and Duel Monsters, Duelist Kingdom’s whole plot of working your way up to enter Pegasus’s castle, plus the architecture of the place, has a lot of heroic fantasy beats--dungeons with important prisoners, a huge castle, mysterious doors with glowing eyes, endless labyrinths with doors to nowhere...He really spared no expense!
Legendary Heroes’ more overt fantasy quest kinda felt like a natural extension of Duelist Kingdom because of that. That might be why when I missed an episode or 2 of LH as a kid I just assumed they were still on the island somewhere. XD
