As I've been listening to shelved by genre's alan moore unit this week I've been realizing that I am going to have to learn more about the history of western magical tradition bullshit than I already know so I can do more than just throw a few barbs its way & actually build into the world of wizard book that while that does exist it also like, does not represent the majority of western or at least american 'magicianhood' (not that the majority in this world is uh Good either), & also be able to have my wizards articulate why they personally hate it. Basically I want to be able to do more than just point & go 👉 'antisemitism orientalism misogyny etc etc' once in the entire book, but God in heaven am I going to hate every second of it bcuz not only is it all the worst appropriative nonsense they're also all so LONGWINDED & FULL OF THEMSELVES

Was trying to find out whether I've talked about the Sims videos Joe makes as a livestreamer in book two on here yet & instead ended up going down an extremely meandering rabbit hole of the brain that resulted in being smacked in the head by how intensely he & Carmine ship Garashir. Like, Joe is fond of K/S bcuz he was like 16 when TOS aired & Carmine is fond of it bcuz he & Rufus used to watch it together & like, K/S is Classic & all BUT

Garashir has the spy stuff that appeals to Carmine & the potential for weird alien sex that appeals to Joe. Joe has ABSOLUTELY written so much fanfiction. He got a Livejournal the moment he was certain Y2K wasn't going to make his computer explode & made a Tumblr once he found out people were posting Supernatural slash on there. He is crossposting that shit absolutely

Carmine on the other hand just makes them in the Sims & then transcribes what happens into Microsoft word, saves it to their PC & does not post it onto his otherwise meticulously updated Sims WordPress blog bcuz he got threatened with a lawsuit by Anne Rice once & is still kind of scared. He's also made an O'Brien Sim that he builds various torture nexuses for & when asked Why will just shrug & say 'it's lore-accurate'.

Norris wasn’t sure if his Waiting Room Friend was gay or a hipster. (The possibility that he might be a gay hipster, or even a metrosexual had also crossed his mind.) His Waiting Room Friend was short and fat and hairy and always dressed Mod-meets-modern or Peacock Revolution with the Technicolor toned down. Today’s outfit featured a chartreuse turtleneck and several strings of multicolor glass beads. His jacket– brown corduroy, with pointy lapels–was draped over one shapely, skinny-jean-clad thigh. His hair was wavy, tousled and dark. As always, he was stunning, but his clothes gave Norris zero concrete hints as to his sexuality. ... Their introductions had consisted of, “Can I get a light, big guy?” Norris had glanced over, seen nothing, and then looked down. “Oh. Sure.”  Despite his Waiting Room Friend being a foot shorter than him, it felt to Norris like it was the other way around. His presence was magnetic. It compelled him. They didn't even spend a lot of time together– just talking and smoking, leaning against the concrete pillars a little bit down the plaza –but the way he considered anything Norris had to say, however quietly or sporadically he said it, had Norris thinking about him long after they’d parted.

Chapter Five of my ongoing novel project is here! It's a long one! We learn a little about Norris' teenhood, meet his crush, & he & Rufus attempt to start their search for Rufus' apprentice, but run into a magical complication.

After scowling for a long moment, arms crossed, he said, surprise in his voice, “You aren’t lying to me.” Norris laughed sharply. “I’m not! Why would I be!” “How should I know! There are plenty of reasons for a weird young man in a weird old house–” “–My house is not weird,” Norris said heatedly. The old man rephrased his sentence in a clear attempt to mollify him. “It has a charmingly bohemian exterior with something deeply sinister at the center.” “Sinister?” Norris cocked a thumb at the black mirror. “You mean–?” “–I mean you.” Anger surged in Norris like a groundswell. Instead of growling, he sucked in a deep breath. Outside, all the windchimes on the porch jangled violently. He exhaled slowly. When he’d fully let the breath out, the windchimes stopped. Norris closed the front door. When he spoke his voice was a little shaky. “You don’t know what you’re talking about.” The old man looked at him with a terror that was rapidly being subsumed by something excited and wily. “I think that I do.” He cleared his throat, obviously hiding the fact he was steadying his nerves. “In fact, young man, I think you may very well be my salvation.”

The first chapter of my current project is live & free to read over at my patreon! I've been working hard on this book & am so excited to share it with you!

The year is 2007. Norris is a 27 year old transgender Goth living in upstate New York. His life isn't exactly unhappy- his job at the library is rewarding, his friendships with the local lesbian farmers are enriching, and his beloved AMC Gremlin always miraculously manages to be tinkered back into shape, but the fact of the matter is that Norris is the only gay man he knows. Unwilling to leave the house his late parents left him for New York City and not in any hurry to figure out internet dating, he's resigned himself to longing for community, until he accidentally frees an old man magically imprisoned inside a tree. 

Rufus ap Rhydderch is in fact an immortal magician, and he’s convinced that Norris is just the man to help him track down the former apprentice who betrayed him, and help him exact his revenge. Norris is never one to say no to people, especially a gay elder who hasn’t had contact with the world since 1970, and so despite Rufus’ overbearing and increasingly sinister tendencies, Norris finds himself drawn into the middle of a wizardly interpersonal conflict that may just end up helping him find what he’s been missing.
