WE LOVE OUR PARTNERS: WMUC Radio

The WMUC DJs are some pretty cool cats. While most college radio stations now broadcast only online, University of Maryland's WMUC continues to do so on FM, doubling the amount of programming it provides. All of the station's content is commercial-free and student-run, too, making them that much cooler in our books.

If FM is your thing, you can tune in to 88.1 in College Park, Hyattsville, D.C., and Silver Spring. You can also hear the FM stream online via wmuc.umd.edu. Online, you'll also find is WMUC Digital, which broadcasts simultaneously with the FM station.

WMUC offers plenty of live, in-studio sessions, such as its Third Rail series, which runs every Sunday from 6pm to 9pm. Recent guest artists in WMUC's studio include Surfer Blood, White Reaper, Alvvays, and more! Tune in to WMUC for great music and great ticket giveaways. Keep your ears peeled!

THIS ONE TIME AT BANDCAMP: Volume 12

Maybe it’s all these midterms making me hate the man, but I’ve been appreciating a whole lot of punk music lately. Luckily for me (and you), there is a plethora of post/surf/punk/skate punk out there on Bandcamp. Reagan Cats: Recently I’ve been listening to a whole lot of post-punk, so I found out about Reagan Cats at just the right time. These Baltimore natives craft sultry punk music that’s heavy on the guitars in all the right places. Their five-track demo reveals that the Reagan Cats have diverse musical influences and a professional sound. I can see a couple different directions their music could head in - possibly more towards shoegaze or maybe more towards skate-punk - and I’m really excited to see what they’re going to do next.

The Absurd by The New Flesh

The New Flesh: When it comes to The New Flesh, I guarantee I could not make my voice as low as the lead singer’s if my life depended on it. It gives me vibes of original punk music like Minor Threat and Fugazi, but with a deep voice reminiscent of Baltimore’s Ed Schrader. Don’t be confused by the album art off of their September release, The Absurd, because even though it looks similar to that of Broken Bells' self-titled, The New Flesh demands your blood, sweat, and tears in ways that indie synth pop wouldn’t dare.

No Way by Skull Theft

Skull Theft: Baltimore’s Skull Theft takes notes from the '80s Washington, D.C. punk scene with short, fast songs heavy on the guitar and drums. The riffs are strong, the vocals are delightfully fuzzy, and the music is easily mosh-able. In a music scene full of soft rock and electronic beats, Skull Theft reminds us what being punk, and not post-punk or any variation therein, is all about.
