I work at Starbucks. I’m one of 2 black girls that work here, but I’m the only one with natural hair. Part of our uniform is a hat or if you prefer you can order a visor. I ordered a visor of course, because my hair doesn’t fit under baseball caps. I wear my hair pulled back into a puff, but I have a lot of hair so my puffs are quite large. I get a lot of compliments from customers about my hair and the way I style it. But my white male shift supervisor seems to always have an issue with my hair. He tries to disguise it with jokes about how big my hair is, but he also says sarcastic
stuff like
“Well I guess I don’t have to wear my hat since some of us are allowed to walk around with hair unrestrained. I guess if a hair falls in someone’s drink, we’ll know who it was.”
Dress code only calls for us to pull our hair back behind our ears. I DO THAT. My puff is equivalent to the other girls long straight ponytails (which by the way are also unrestrained. Nobody tells them they should wear a bun to keep their ponytails from resting on their shoulders.)
My parents suggested I just wear a hairnet so I can’t get into any trouble. But I find that completely unfair. No one else has to wear one for having more problematic hair than I do. My hair is really coily and curly. I have to comb my shed hairs OUT. They never just fall out. I regularly see my White coworkers pick hair off of each other’s black shirts like monkeys grooming each other. What do you guys think? I personally want to fight this. Fuck hairnets.
