Polaris looked at his trainer as he slept. He had never imagined that he would ever bend to another trainer. Something about the idea had always spooked the Pokémon. It wasn’t the usual disdain that some other Pokémon had for the idea, but genuine terror. The thought would sometimes bring up memories of a trainer with blazing red hair and blue eyes. He was sometimes very cruel to him, he did not like remembering those times.
Although, he sometimes longed for his old trainer. Calm mismatched eyes watching him with a secret smile as he played with a simple handmade toy floated across the Ninetails’ mind. The same eyes full of tears as tiny gentle hands rubbed a potion into his injuries. He does not quite remember what happened to his trainer but one day he went from a vulpix to a ninetails without warning. Polaris remembered being very scared and in a lot of pain. When all had quieted, his trainer was gone. All that was left was the malevolent taskmaster.
But here in the field with Izuku the man was far away. The excitable but kind boy was a wonderful companion. Easy to please and caring beyond anything the Pokémon was familiar with. He treated all Pokémon like he treated people, like they were the most precious things in the world.
Today was a primary example. They had been traversing this meadow en route to a new city, searching for Dr. Shield and his daughter Melissa. He had decided to take a break so that Polaris could rest. Polaris had carried his trainer most of the way. It was no hard task for such a durable Pokémon. But Midoriya insisted and even let his other Pokémon out to enjoy some fresh air.
The others had wandered off crying out in joy. Polaris had simply laid down in the soft grass. After a while of running about with the other Pokémon, Izuku had knelt down next to the ninetails with a weary, but pleased sigh. He had reached up and scratched at the side of his flank before starting to brush his hair with a grooming brush from his backpack.
Once that was done, he swiftly braided it into a simple braid. The boy chattered to him about nonsensical things and laughed at the antics of the other Pokémon as they flitted about while he worked. Once he was done he laid against Polaris and eventually dozed off in the late afternoon sun. Polaris stared at the freckled trainer, wondering how he got so lucky to become paired with him.
For @crzangel for her Birthday! Sorry this is so late! I hope you like it!
