Outsider POV?

oooh I think I wanna say this one is an A because I do find it so fun and feel like I don't get enough of it. I just love reading...external interpretations of things where I know what's going on but the pov character does not, or has partial knowledge, and that knowledge constructs a picture that may or may not align with the experience of the characters who are being observed.

it just gives me a particular kind of delight. I think this first came up for me with outsider pov of supernatural, which has so much potential built into it, but it's really become a thing for me across fandoms, and even when the "outsider" is just, like, an outsider to the situation (like the povs in Perspective, for example, where they're all main characters but on the outside of and isolated from the relationship being observed) I'm really about it.

there's just something juicy about the angle a good outsider pov can give on a dynamic/group of dynamics/character that I really enjoy.

NieLan for the ship asks?

Oh boy. Do I Ship NieLan. Whatta question.

I’m going to go with ‘no’ even though I do believe their friendship had romantic undertones and this is a load-bearing pillar of the 3zun dynamic. But it’s such a coughing baby next to the hydrogen bombs of the other two legs of the triangle that I very rarely seek out content for it.

Don’t Ship It

1. Why don’t you ship it?

The thing is, you can see the shadow of nielan throughout the story, and I’m not immune to the angst when LXC recognized his body, or when NMJ’s fierce corpse recognizes his music even after death. It’s good stuff! But for me to get emotionally invested in a ship, I need to see them liking each other, and canon just doesn’t show me what LXC liked about NMJ. It’s easy enough to fill in the gaps and presume that he liked NMJ’s straightforward intelligence, his unwavering righteousness and the fact that LXC would be able to unmask and relax in his company, but I’m just less inclined to do that mental work when JGY is there being so endearingly insane with both of them.

This is also not helped by an unfortunate number of nielan primary shippers flanderizing JGY into a cackling villain who neither of them ever really cared about in their posts and fanfictions. which further dampens my enthusiasm. sad but true

2. What would have made you like it?

One single flashback to their golden childhood days woulda done it for me I think. And it’s kind of poetic that we don’t get that because all that remains of NMJ after death is his hatred for JGY.

3. Despite not shipping it, do you have anything positive to say about it?

Like I said, it’s great in theory, it just doesn’t compel me. But 3zun and xiyao would be incomplete without it. Even in AUs where LXC is complicit in NMJ’s death- especially in those, really- one must acknowledge and weave in nielan.

12. The unpopular character you like and why more people should like them

Taking "unpopular" to mean "not actively popular" rather than "actively disliked", because I don't think she's really disliked - Chiyoh!!

I talked more at length about how I interpret her deal here and here, but god, there's so much interesting stuff going on with her! The nature of justice and what it means to enact it, the meaning and uses of violence; the way she's slotted in between Will and Hannibal in terms of the parallels (and contrasts) with what Hannibal did to Will (and Abigail, and Bedelia), and the way she's part of something Hannibal set up years and years ago that Will swept in and finished; the way she kind of splits the difference between them in terms of having a very solid code of conduct she adheres to, but one a bit askew of conventional morality and laws. The fact that aside from Bedelia, she might be the one person on the show who consistently speaks in the same sort of over-the-top metaphor speak that Will and Hannibal use. She's on their level! (And, let us not forget, makes conversation via talking about how snails can survive digestion. She's extremely odd, and I want to see that show up more in portrayals of her!)

Her determined stoicism, and the way it gets shattered when she's forced to defend herself, and how devastated she is post-murder. The way she can subject a man to considerable cruelty and then whisper "I'm sorry" before she kills him. The fact that she dedicated her life's purpose to the memory of a dead girl she never met. The weird Gothic temporality stuff going on with her character, where she was in stasis during the time she spent on the Lecter estate, and time only passed outside, leaving her behind. (When I write the fic I'm planning, I am going to write her as having a very very weird sense of time and memory.)

Those are the threads I'd love to see more uptake on!

Favourite Jean friendship?

oh man, favorite friendship? Hmmmmm.

I’m a big big fan of Jean and Kaeya. I can’t fathom writing fic about either of them without at least mentioning the other. They are longtime friends! They are coworkers! They speak highly about each other and Kaeya’s voice line about Jean sounds vaguely like he’s threatening you should you refuse to give Jean your “full support.”

I feel like they’re the kind of deeply bonded and unquestionably caring but also maladjusted besties who oh so gently but firmly steer each other away from their more self destructive behaviors only to immediately head in that direction themselves. They’re both kind of uh. A mess. But they love and support each other <3

Trope asks: Canadian shack?

Okay I recognized this as being the Due South retirement thing but double checked on Fanlore to make sure I grasped the bounds of this vintage trope correctly. 😆

It seems a pure example of the form is not just retiring a pairing to the countryside, like Aziraphale and Crowley, but getting a non-canon pairing to move to a small house specifically in Canada, as expeditiously as possible--doing it in a few hundred words was apparently desirable.

I'm unlikely to do this! It's not impossible, since it doesn't offend me and isn't difficult, but since it's fallen out of fashion as a form I'm not likely to become swept up in it by proximity and repetition. And if I do write a fic where a couple retires to the countryside I'll probably have some other agenda that'll get most of the focus.

there's a lot of competition for this one, but at the end of the day, it's gotta be Naesala. i love my amoral sleazy bird king onto which i have projected SO MUCH NONSENSE <33333

35. What’s something you wish IntSys would just stop doing?

while i can tolerate the "home base" (the monastery in Three Houses, the Somniel in Engage, etc) in most FE games i've played, i long for the days of yore where you just went STRAIGHT from map to map with no stupid bullshit fiddling in-between. i assume we're never getting rid of them but a girl can hope. (this was one of many reasons the Ashen Wolves DLC was fantastic; all the snappiness of modern FE with none of the cruft of modern FE)
