Beyond the Wall, winter felt as if it were a near constant thing. Everything was touched by death. Either one lived despite the discomfort or died and became a story that would make children stay awake at night. In her dreams she had seen a boy--much younger than her--carried by a big brute of a man in search of something beyond the Wall.
It gave her quite a fright. The boy was powerful--that much she knew. When he looked into her own eyes, he saw right through the dreams. Neither of them had the chance to speak within the dreams--she had woken so quickly, all she had was a picture of his face. A face that looked more crow than boy.
And the closer they came, the stronger a pull she felt. The snowy owl--the one she'd saved when it was a mere babe--was the first animal she had seen such things from. Like day and night, the two were connected. No matter how far she went, the owl seemed content to follow.
Now she heard voices--voices with an unfamiliar accent. Her owl flew ahead, circling above the boy and his companions before he landed on a tree, calling out loudly as if to say that the intruders were in his territory.
Elysia poked her head past the trunk of a tree and peered at the boy who had been leaned up against a tree, warming himself by the start of a fire.
❝ You--you are the one I saw. ❞ Her voice called out softly to him, a gentle beckoning. ❝ But you were flying. Just as I was. ❞
