One of the adventures I had during my forty-day leave happened in the early morning. I was enjoying my first cup of coffee while watching the birds and red squirrels battle it out at my feeders when something out on the lake caught my eye. It was a dark object that contrasted against the light snow about a thousand feet out. It didn’t appear to move, but I grabbed my binoculars to better see what it was. I thought it might be a log or muddy slush that had fallen off a snowmobile travelling by, but a couple of crows that flew down to peck at the unknown object got me curious. Living in unpopulated areas one tends to see more wildlife and this stationary object in the snow had my attention. Getting dressed in warm layers of wool, down and fur I grabbed a couple hand warmers and headed out. I had seen some wolf prints in the snow earlier that week and wondered if they had captured something during the night. Sure enough as I got closer I could see the carnage spread over several yards where a deer had been chased and captured. Sadly the wolves had captured a deer, eating most of it they left the remaining bits for the birds and small critters to peck away at.
