May 2018: RECAP PT 3

On Thursday the 31st of May, my beautiful Mr Riley was taken to the vet and put to sleep. He had suffered for a long time from an especially aggressive tumor disease (easily treatable in big dogs, but particularly nasty in cats). I think he had about 3 to 5 surgeries on his head within 2 years to try and remove the tumors that would continue to come back. He was a wonderfully good natured cat (to the point that the vet’s had put a special comment on his file saying what a lovely cat he was) who had never seemed bothered by the tumors growing between his left ear and eye. It was only in the last month or so of his life that they started to impede his vision, pushing half of his eyelid across his eye. The vet had said it was time and so my parents organised for the appointment to be at a time when I would be able to skype them and see Riley before they took him.

Even though I had been living without him for over 4 months, it was still an extremely difficult day (I am still tearing up now as I write this). I’d spent all morning and the previous night sobbing for my poor boy.

As many of you know, Riley was my world. He was the deciding factor in my moving overseas. Early in 2017 we had been told that it was unlikely that Riley would make it to Christmas that year. And my parents not intending to downsize their house any time soon and Kathryn having moved to NSW, Riley was literally the only thing keeping my in Victoria. So after that prognosis, I decided to pursue teaching in London much more seriously. The fact that Riley was able to live over 5 months past the Vet’s estimation is a testament to how much of a fighter he was and how loved he was. Every single time we took him for a check up the Vet would remark how incredible it was that Riley was still in very good health, tumor aside, and how surprised he was at this fact. My parents decided to bring Riley home and bury him in the backyard so that I can properly say goodbye when I return. We plan on planting flowers over his grave, if possible, they will be cornflowers which I have always associated with peace and restfulness. 

So to Riley, my best boy, the one who got me through all of the stress of VCE and 5 years of University with you unconditional love and affection, Goodnight. You will always be close to my heart. I am so sorry I couldn’t be there for you in your final moments. I love you so much.
