Wool Winder

April 5 1904 – November 28 1928 Raced from 1906-1909 Thoroughbred Stallion - United Kingdom

It's not known how Wool Winder got his name.

Wool Winder was described as a very imposing horse, and only ran twice in is two year old season as he was as late developer. He was second in his debut in the Fulbourne Stakes to Prince of Orange, and won the Alington Plate beating Hill Sprite.

He was at his best as a three year old, winning the Castle Plate, Duchess of York Plate, New Biennial Stakes, Lingfield Park Plate, Sussex Stakes, St. Leger Stakes and the City of London's Breeders' Foal Stakes (His dam St. Windeline won this same race in 1902 in a walk-over at 100/15 odds). He was also second in the Epsom Derby behind Orby.

His four year old debut and only start in 1908 was in the Newmarket March Stakes. He finished unplaced which was contributed to him carrying 7lbs more weight then winner Succor. Wool Winder lost form later in the season, and suffered from several health and soundness issues. He returned in 1909, losing by a head to Lafayette in the March Stakes. His final race he ran sixth and last in the Coronation Cup, dropping out of contention early from the start.

After his disappointing two years and ongoing health issues, he was retired and sold to the Austrian Government for 15,000 guineas to stand at stud. Wool Winder stood at Napajelda Stud in Austria-Hungary (Czech Republic). He was the leading sire in Austria in 1916 and 1928. Despite being a success in his lifetime, very few of his sons became breeding stallions so his sire line has all but vanished. Wool Winder died on November 28 1928 at age 24 due to complications from an intestinal infection.
